2016 Super Cup Stock Car Series Schedule

2016 Super Cup Stock Car Series Schedule Ends Season At Rockingham Speedway

2016 Super Cup Stock Car Series Schedule - Rockingham SpeedwayThe 2016 Super Cup Stock Car Series schedule has been released. The partial schedule includes a season final at the now closed Rockingham Speedway.

The partial 2016 SCSCS schedule lists 8 dates. 4 of which are listed at TBA venue’s. However, the season finale at Rockingham Speedway is getting classic NASCAR fans excited.

The Rock is a 1 mile high banked paved oval. The abandoned NASCAR track is located in Rockingham, NC.

Rockingham Speedway hosted it’s final NASCAR Cup Series race on February 22, 2004. Matt Kenseth won that race is spectacular fashion. He beat newcomer Kasey Kahne by just 0.010 seconds. The finish is listed as the 10th closest finish in NASCAR history.

Only 50,000 people saw that race from the grandstands. It was 10,000 under full capacity.

Speedway Motorsports put the track up for sale by auction on October 2, 2007. ARCA RE/MAX Series Series car owner and former driver Andy Hillenburg purchased the track for $4.4 Million. ARCA soon began hosting races at the speedway.

In 2011, ARCA left and was replaced by the UARA and CARS Pro Cup series.

On, April 15, 2012 the NASCAR Truck Series made a surprise return to Rockingham Speedway.

However, the NASCAR Truck Series did not return due to financial struggles. In September it was reported that Farmers & Merchants Bank was requesting a court order to take “immediate and exclusive custody” of the speedway from co-owners Hillenburg and Bill Silas, who were reported to owe $4.5 million to the bank.

Now, Rockingham Speedway has sat idle for the past 3 years.

An organization associated with bringing Rockingham Speedway in North Carolina back to life has approached the Super Cup Stock Car Series about holding a special event at the historic one-mile facility in 2016. The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 15 and will include the post-season series awards banquet as well.

Super Cup Stock Car Series Television Coverage?

SCSCS has received numerous inquires from competitors and others concerning the proposed 2016 television package.

Although there has been significant progress made towards finalizing the television package including letters of intent having been tendered, due to the impending holiday season, SCSCS expects that a formal announcement may not be forthcoming until January.

The process of creating this package has brought several exciting unexpected new opportunities to factor into the long term future direction of SCSCS.  As indicated in the rough schedule outline, the most notable is Rockingham Speedway which has approached SCSCS.

Competitors are again advised that the dates indicated by the rough schedules are targeted dates and are subject to shifting a week in either direction depending on available broadcast airtimes as well production scheduling allowances.

A few broadcast advertising opportunities do remain available at this time however interested parties should contact SCSCS Series Director Joe Schmaling as soon as possible.
