2017 Chili Bowl Results – January 14, 2017 – Night 5 – Chili Bowl Nationals

2017 Chili Bowl results from January 14th, 2017 are posted below. This is the fifth and final night of dirt midget racing action at the Tulsa Expo Raceway. The Chili Bowl Nationals is hosted in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

When you see 365 dirt midget race teams under one roof you know you’re at the Chili Bowl Nationals. 372 dirt drivers fighting to 24 spots in the main event. Dirt will fly and a few unfortunate cars will end up on the wrong end on the dirt surface, wheels aiming at the lights!

2017 Chili Bowl Results - Main Event - Chili Bowl Nationals Final Night Results

Tonight is the big night. Putting all the preliminary night winners into a single main event. Sifting 24 cars out of a field of 372, is a white knuckle battle. In the end, you have the best dirt racing drivers in the world, all in a single main event. Champions from from the first starting spot to the last. A wheel to wheel show for 55 laps.

Rico Abreu opened the weekend battling for his 3rd straight Chili Bowl Nationals win. However, this week he’s had a few snaps along the way. Contact in the main event earlier in the week buried him deep in the alphabet soup today. He started in the F main. Early in that race is he caught up in someone else’s accident. He tried to repair the dirt midget, no success. As the defending race champion, Rico was offered the one and only provisional starting spot at the tail of the A Main.

Rico Abreu was interviewed before the main event got under way. Talking on the first 10 laps, “You gotta pass. Just because that leaders coming quick.” But he stays positive, “I got nothing to lose. All I can do is go forward.” The Chili Bowl is important to Rico Abreu, “I got a place right in the bottom of my heart for this place.”

Thomas Meseraull battled his way through the 2017 Chili Bowl results sheet. His war with the Tulsa Expo Raceway started in the D Main, he won that. That put him at the tail of the field for the C Main. Driving through the C Feature, he finished 3rd. That placed him, again, at the tail of the B Main with a final chance of transferring into the main event. He finished 5th in the B Main! They took the top 6 dirt midgets from the B Main to the A Main, he made the show, by one spot.

Shane Golobic drove to victory in the first of two stacked B Mains. He was stalked by Jerry Coons Jr the entire race, Coons came up just short. Gary Taylor, Jonathan Beason, Thomas Meseraull and Michael Faccinto trailed the leaders but won the battle against the event as a whole, claiming their spot in the main event. Donny Schatz missed the main event by 1 spot, he finished 7th.

I don’t know if I ever get more nervous then when I come to the Chili Bowl.

-Ricky Stenhouse Jr

NASCAR driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. won the other B Main. He crossed the line with much of the water blown out of the engine. Overheating, yet he transferred into the main event. He was interviewed after picking up his B Main win, “I don’t know if I ever get more nervous than when I come to the Chili Bowl.”

Damion Gardner, Tyler Thomas, Tanner Thorson, ARCA Racing Series champion driver Chase Briscoe and Justin Peck trailed Stenhouse Jr. All 6 claimed their place in the main event.

Sammy Swindell was a victim of a slide job gone wrong via Dave Darland. While in a transfer spot he got turned around and stalled the dirt midget engine. He was forced to the tail of the B Main early. He climbed all the back to 7th. 1 lap to go he found himself behind Darland. He dove to the inside of Dave Darland in turn one, the door was slammed shut, taking both drivers out. He failed to transfer into the A Main.

The main event underway… Polesitter Justin Grant leads Christopher Bell and the rest of the field piloting aggressive open wheel cars into turn 1.

Gary Taylor in the 05 was the first one to drop from the main event. He climbed from his car and walked to the pit on lap 4 after a crash.

Back green, the field heads to the bottom. Bouncing off the inside burm. It will take several laps for the track to widen out. Justin Grant and Christopher Bell are in their own league, as they put a gap on the field.

Pause. We have a parking lot on the race track and Chase Brisco is upside down. Rico Abreu is involved. Several cars stall, including Abreu, who gets sent back to the rear, starting the process all over again. Chase Brisco re-fires!

2017 Chili Bowl Race Results A Main Event - January 14, 2016 - Zach Daum

Zach Daum isn’t happy following the train on the bottom. He’s the first car to move to the high-side of the race track. It will take a few laps but it looks like he’s creating his own groove. Tyler Thomas get spun and Duam’s progress is halted.

Christopher Bell pulls a slide job on the leader. It works! Justin Grant has to check up and falls to 3rd. Pittman moves up to 2nd. The high-side is here! Lap 30, most drivers are now running to top of the racetrack.

Lap 36, Rico Abreu inside the top 10. 9th, he’s passed 16 cars in the blink of an eye. Bell continues to lead and he’s pulled out a .6 sec lead. However, your leader has just reached the tail end of the field. He will have to start working lapped traffic.

Caution. Ricky Stenhouse Jr and Rico Abreu are parked on the track. Jerry Coons Jr put a slide job on Tyler Courtney. It stacked up the field behind them. Many drivers stall. Rico is again, sent to the rear.

We’re green and back in the throttle. Christopher Bell is already gone, 3 wide behind him. His progress is brought to a stop as another slide job goes wrong. Caution, 7 laps to go.

Green. Again Bell has checked out. He smokes the entire field including Pittman on restarts. The gap continues to increase, Bell is untouchable.

The Norman, Oklahoma native and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver Christopher Bell wins!

2017 Chili Bowl Results - January 14, 2016 - Christopher Bell Wins

Bell climbs from his car smiling, “Man this has been my whole life coming. I’ve come here for so long! I remember sitting up in those grand stands just watching. It’s a dream come true.”

The 2017 Chili Bowl dirt midget racetrack was worked and prepped by NASCAR champion Tony Stewart. The same as last year, the now retired NASCAR driver has switched his racing focus to dirt. It’s much more than driving, he’s just deep rooted with dirt racing.

Tony Stewart was interviewed before the A Main at the Chili Bowl. He spoke on his 2017 racing plans. He said he’s running everything on dirt! Sprint cars, late models and more. How often? ” We have 71 races right now but it could be as high as 85.”

What’s the economic impact of the Chili Bowl?
$15 million dollars has been spent by dirt racing fans during the course of the 2017 Chili Bowl Nationals.
