NASCAR Allstar Results – May 20, 2017

It’s one hot night at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The final NASCAR All-Star event for the sports most popular driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Tonight, NASCAR go’s Saturday night shootout racing.

Clint Bowyer, Ryan Blaney and Daniel Suarez all transferred into this race via segment wins in the 2017 Monster Energy Open. Chase Elliott earned a sport via the fan vote.

There’s a new element tonight. Super-sticky, ultra-fast racing tires. Teams will get one set of those, 3 sets of harder tires. But when will they use them? The falloff on those tires are dramatic. Will the winner even use them at all? After 10 laps, the hard tires might be faster. The final segment is only 10 laps.

Kyle Larson will start on the pole for the NACSAR Allstar race. He took pole in yesterday’s qualifying show.

Green flag. 20 laps will complete stage 1. Kyle Larson clears Kyle Busch at the exit of turn 2. Meanwhile, they are 3 wide, 4 rows deep outside the top 10. Every position is important, only the top 10 will qualify for the final stage, based on average finish.

Trouble for Martin Truex Jr. He’s fallen all the way to the back of the field. He reports to the crew, “I have a really bad shake.” Martin Truex Jr was one of the favorites heading into tonights event.

Dale Earnhardt Jr is also struggling. He’s complaining of a tight racecar. He claims he’s jacking the driver trackbar adjuster by an inch. Loose in, tight everywhere else.

Kyle Larson is in his own zipcode. He will take the #42 to the stage win.

Stage 1 Results: 1. Kyle Larson; 2. Kyle Busch; 3. Kevin Harvick; 4. Jimmie Johnson; 5. Brad Keselowski; 6. Matt Kenseth; 7. Kurt Busch; 8. Denny Hamlin; 9. Jammie McMurray; 10. Kasey Kahne

Matt Kenseth is smoking off pit road! It’s an oil leak. The crew requests that he return to the pits. The team then pushes it to the garage. Broken oil cooler. Only 11 drivers left that haven’t used their green sticky tires. 9 drivers either used them in stage 1 or are getting ready to start with them right now in stage 2.

Green flag, 20 more laps. Kyle Larson and Kyle Busch lead the field. Jimmie Johnson takes the field 3 wide on the outside. He’s putting his set of sticky tires to use. He drives from 6th to 3rd in one corner. Lap 4, Jimmie Johnson moves around Kyle Busch to take 2nd.

12 to go in stage 2, Jimmie Johnson has taken a huge chuck out of Kyle Larson’s lead. He’s cleared Kyle Busch by nearly a full second after making the pass 8 laps previous. However, it’s likely his tires are about to fall off the cliff.

6 to go, Kyle Busch is reeling Jimmie Johnson back in. Kyle Larson is gone, two full seconds up the road. He’s not going to catch him. Kyle Larson clearly wants to become a millionaire tonight.

Kyle Larson wins stage 2! A clean sweep of the NASCAR All-Star race thus far.

Stage 2 results: 1. Kyle Larson; 2. Jimmie Johnson; 3. Kyle Busch; 4. Kurt Busch; 5. Jamie McMurray; 6. Denny Hamlin; 7. Brad Keselowski; 8. Kevin Harvick; 9. Clint Bowyer; 10. Chase Elliott

Clint Bowyer leads the field off pit road. He takes two tires. Ryan Blaney agrees with that strategy, he also takes just two tires. Kyle Larson comes out in 3rd, 4 tires.

Drama! Clint Bowyer put on 4 green tires on to start the last stage. This stage, the team just installed two new yellow tires. Clint Bowyer is the only one running duel tire compounds.

The rules state you need to put 4 green tires on at the same time. However, it doesn’t say you have to take them off at the same time. Stewart-Haas Racing has found a loop-hole. But will it work?

More drama! Brad Keselowski put on his green tires. He then rolled around under caution and changed his mind. He took them back off, saving them for the final stage instead. NASCAR says, “no way!” The rule is you can only put them on once, they must be stickers when you put the soft tires on. Brad Keselowski is out of new tires.

Green flag, 20 more. Clint Bowyer is already in the way! Kyle Larson is trapped behind him. Larson falls outside the top 5. Meanwhile, Jimmie Johnson is taking the lead. Johnson drives around Ryan Blaney on the outside.

15 to go, now Ryan Blaney is in the way. Kurt Busch and Kevin Harvick split him, 3 wide down the front straight-away.

Chase Elliott bounces off the way on the exit of turn 4. Hamlin scrapes in the next lap. The next lap, it’s Dale Earnhardt Jr’s turn. The turn 4 wall is taking a beating.

10 to go, Larson is in 4th. He’s chasing Kurt Busch and Kevin Harvick. He doesn’t need to pass them, even with a 4th place finish he’ll still have the best average finish.

4 to go, Kyle Larson drives around Kurt Busch for 3rd. Kevin Harvick is now chasing down Jimmie Johnson.

2 to go, Ryan Newman is in the wall. Contact with Denny Hamlin caused a flat right front. No caution. Kyle Larson has caught Kevin Harvick, he runs out of time.

Jimmie Johnson wins stage 3!

Kyle Larson, Jimmie Jonson, Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Kurt Busch, Jamie McMurray, Denny Hamlin, Brad Keselowski and Chase Elliott and Joey Logano will advance to the final stage. Everyone else has just been eliminated for the final 10-lap shootout.

The entire field pits, except Brad Keselowski. Jimmie Johnson leads the field off pit road. 3 wide at the line for 2nd. Joey Logano pits again, they tape it up solid and hook up cooling tubes at the same time. One to combat the other. The #22 will be shooting water at the end of this race

Green. Kyle Busch takes Brad Keselowski 3 wide before the second half of the tri-oval. New leader, Kyle Busch. Brad Keselowski is too slow. Kyle Larson gives him the bumper and sends him up the racetrack.

7 to go, Kyle Busch, Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Larson run nose to tail for the lead. Denny Hamlin is on pit lane, rubbing fender and possibly a flat tire.

4 to go, Larson is searching. He ventures to the wall, trying the high-groove for the first time all night.

2 to go, Kyle Busch is pulling away from both of them. He now leads by over a full second. Kyle Larson throws a slidejob on Jimmie Johnson. He makes it work!

Kyle Busch is the NASCAR Allstar race winner! He’s taking home $1,000,000. The M&M’s, NOS Energy Drink driver is going to win the Monster Energy All-Star race.
