The LOLMDS points battle is getting exciting again with a recent and significant gap reduction on the points chart. The point leader, Scott Bloomquist had unrelated mechanical issues in the previous two Lucas Oil Dirt Series events. Last night, as Bloomquist pulled into the pits, Josh Richards and Tim McCreadie finished 1-2. Tonight, the battle resumes.
Qualifying
The rookie, Hudson O’Neal set quick time at 49.235. Josh Richards was forced to run his qualifying session, twice. The transponder didn’t pick up on the first go around.
Heat 1
Hudson O’Neal jumps out to the early lead. Jimmy Owens and Dennis Erb trail. O’Neal begins to run away with it. I spoke two soon. They are both reeling him in.
O’Neal sees them coming. He was running the top. O’Neal low to take the line away. Jimmy Owens goes high in 3-4. He’s tries to slingshot under him on exit. He does but O’Neal holds him off in 1.
2 to go, Owens tries it again. Same move. This time he’s too high. He gets into the loose stuff and lost all drive on exit. Dennis Erb is under Owens. O’Neal drives to the win in heat 1.
Heat 2
Josh Richards, Tim McCreadie and Scott Bloomquist all fill this heat. Green, Richards is gone.
Bloomquist was running 3rd early. He drifted a little high in 1-2. Don O’Neal slipped passed.
Richards is taking the widest arc of anyone all night. Entering turn 1-2 up against the outside wall, diving all the way to the inside for exit. Richards drives away to a win in heat 2.
Heat 3
Earl Pearson Jr takes the bottom in turn 1. It proves quicker, he’s passed Satterlee. He goes high in 3-4. Wrong lane, Satterlee goes low. New leader.
Caution. Kody Evans has pulled off and there’s a spinner in turn 4.
Pearson wants the lead back. Satterlee picks the middle of 3-4. Earl Pearson Jr to the bottom. The inside is much quicker in the corner. However the middle carries momentum all the way down these long straight aways.
Multiple times Pearson pulls along side on the exit. By the time they get to the end of the straight, Satterlee has him cleared. Satterlee wins the 3rd and final heat.
Main Event
50 laps around Mansfield Speedway. Hudson O’Neal and Josh Richards lead the Lucas Oil Late Model starting grid.
Green flag, Josh Richards beats Hudson O’Neal to turn 1. He’s driving away already.
Richards catches lapped traffic quickly. He was running low, but he can pass the lapped cars anywhere and with ease. He continues to drive away from the field.
Caution. Lap 29. Slow car on track. The field is going to get another shot at Josh Richards. 9 of the top 10 are LOLMDS regulars.
Steve Francis, Conley and other come into the pit lane.
Green, Richards is gone again. The race is on for 2nd. Hudson O’Neal has it, Satterlee wants it. Satterlee tries the highside. He hits a big bump, jump sideways but makes it work anyway. They are even down the straight. Satterlee to 2nd.
Lap 40. Caution. Don O’Neal is slow, he’s coasting around the highside of the track. The #5 pits, serviced and re-enters the track. He’ll start at the tail. Don O’Neal was near the top 5.
Scott Bloomquist and Earl Pearson Jr fight for space on the entry of 3. They rub slightly.
Tim McCreadie is just in front of these two, riding the wall. In the next corner, Bloomquist remains high. Maybe he found something in the middle. Move Bloomquist around Pearson.
Josh Richards drives away. He wins the Freedom 50 at Mansfield Motor Speedway!

2nd and 3rd were filled by 2 of the 3 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series rookie of the year contenders. Gregg Satterlee finished in the runner up spot.
Hudson O’Neal came to the line 3rd. I’m pretty sure that’s his best Lucas Oil Dirt finish of the year.
Josh Richards from victory lane, “This is one awesome track. I was fortunate enough to come here and run an ARCA race for Venturini Motorsports like seven years ago. To have another dirt track come onboard, you don’t see that very often. It’s cool to see them put the effort out and with such a facility like this it’s neat to win here.”
The winner continued, “I can’t thank the crowd and the track crew enough. I was a little skeptical from the races earlier this year on how the track conditions would be, but they did a phenomenal job getting the track worked in. The car moved around really well. I could pass cars pretty much at will, I had a few close calls, but other than that, the car was exceptional.”
Satterlee discusses his race from the podium, “It an awesome race, just glad to get on the podium two nights in a row.”
On the track, “They haven’t raced here a lot. Our hats are off to the promoter and everyone who put this show on tonight. There was a huge crowd here tonight. We always like racing in front of a big crowd it’s always a lot of fun. We had a great car again, but we have some more tweaking to do to catch this green number 1 car.”
Satterlee is in a rookie battle with Hudson O’Neal, “Good job to Hudson, he’s only 16 and he is going to be a threat for years to come. I enjoyed racing with him side-by-side tonight, hopefully we can all get to do this again tomorrow night in Zanesville. This is a beautiful facility and we could race all over the track. I look forward to coming back.”
How does the New Deal Hudson O’Neal feel? From the podium, “It was a blast out there. Congratulations to Josh on the win. I am just happy to be here and run inside the top three. I can’t wait to call my car owner Todd Burns and tell him, he is going to be so excited.”
O’Neal continued, It’s so much fun racing with all of these guys. It’s a whole team effort. I look to coming back here next year it races phenomenal,” said the driver of the Peak Antifreeze and Motor Oil, Vermeer Midwest, Mark Martin Automotive, Kimball Midwest by Krissie sponsored Club 29 entry.
Tomorrow night the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will rack them one more time in Ohio. The national dirt late model tour heads to Muskingum County Speedway in Zanesville, OH.
