Where does Bobby Pierce want to take his career?

Bobby Pierce discusses his racing goals

Bobby Pierce just won the DIRTcar UMP Summer Nationals. Incredibly, it’s the 3rd year that he’s claimed the title, in a row. At age 20, Bobby Pierce still has many options. He can venture is many directions. But where does Bobby Pierce want to go?

I asked him that very question at a recent DIRTcar UMP Summer Nationals event. As Bobby Pierce signed autographs for young race fans, we discussed future possibilities.

Bobby Pierce explains current goals, “Just when as many races in this [dirt late model], win as many crown jewels as I can [and] win as many championships.”

“I’ve dabbled in some NASCAR stuff, NASCAR trucks. Two dirt races in Eldora. I finished 2nd in the first one. I led a lot of laps in both of them, just couldn’t pull it off.”

Bobby Pierce had mechanical issues in the 2016 Eldora Dirt Derby. He was unable to shift out of 4th gear. Pierce had one of the fastest cars. However, he restarted from the lead. However, as soon as the race resumed he dropped anchor, en route to the back of the field.

At the NASCAR ranks, Pierce has run more than just dirt. He described, “I ran about 5 asphalt truck races. I ran a few asphalt late model races. I ran one race at Hickory North Carolina with Dale JR Motorsports. I finished 2nd there.”

“So I don’t know. To go with that asphalt stuff you gotta have a lot of sponsors to do it right. You know, maybe someday someone will want to cough up some money.”

But do you want to?

Pierce has a love of dirt, “Well, I mean dirt is always fun. I think it always come down to what you’re good at too. I’ve always raced dirt cars, my whole life.”

He explained the problems with a NASCAR deal, “The asphalt thing, like sponsorship in that doesn’t go as far as it would in a dirt car. It’s kinda easier to make that work. But like I said, to do it you gotta get a big money sponsorship. I’d definitely like to try it again.”

Say you went to an asphalt late model. Is the goal to get back to NASCAR?

Pierce declares his current goals are focused on dirt, “With this, what I’m doing right now I’m working toward that goal of winning as many races as I can. Possibly someday running Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series or World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series.”

“You know, I’ve run the Summer Nationals and I’ve won that the past two years.” This was asked just ahead of him clinching his 3rd title.

He had a fair amount of success on the Hell Tour before that point as well. At age 16, Bobby Pierce finished 2nd in the UMP Hell Tour standings in 2013.

Pierce continued, “NASCAR is something that, yeah, I’ve thought about.”

I was wishing you’d say that you’d want to stay here.

“Well yeah, that’s probably what’s going to happen.”

You seem like a short track guy to me?

“Oh yeah, I love the short tracks. I ran Kansas, Charlotte, Miami, Martinsville. I like Martinsville. I like Kansas a lot. I was actually the 2nd fastest truck for the last 20 laps of the race. So, that was pretty cool.”

Currently, Bobby Pierce has run a total of 7 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races. Two on the dirt and five on asphalt tracks.

Three of them came in 2015, four more in 2016. In 2017, he has plans to run the single NASCAR Dirt race. He has singed with the Mittler Brothers to run the 2017 Eldora Dirt Derby which will take place next week.
