Pocono Raceway results from July 30, 2017 featuring the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series

Today, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series returns to the Pocono’s. The national stock car tour unloads at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, PA.

Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr line up on row 1. These two wrecked each other last week. It ended with a pit crew confrontation that netted suspensions to Furniture Row Racing crew members. Now, they pick up where they left off before the incident.

Today, stage 1 is 50 laps. Stage 2 is another 50 laps. The final stage will be another 60 laps. 160 total circuits around Pocono Raceway.

Stage 1

Green flag. Kyle Busch picks the outside. He clears Martin Truex Jr well before turn 1. Trouble! Big crash on lap 1. Matt Kenseth got loose under Jimmie Johnson in turn 3. He spins 90 degree’s in front of the field.

Many cars are involved as the field stacks up behind the spin; Austin Dillon, Danica Patrick, Matt Kenseth, Paul Menard, Matt DiBendetto, Chris Buescher, Aric Almirola and Michael McDowell. Major damage for Aric Almirola and others. Kenseth pulls it back in line, no damage. Dale Earnhardt Jr and Ricky Stenhouse Jr barely slip through as the track blocks behind them.

Green is back out. Kyle Busch gets the jump. Martin Truex Jr pulls in behind, catches the draft, before turn 1. The teammate game is clearly active again.

Lap 15, Martin Truex Jr currently runs 2nd. However, the team is diagnosing a mechanical issue. Could be electrical.

lap 18, green flag pit stops have begun. Kevin Harvick, Joey Logano and more are first. Chase Elliott, Jamie McMurray come in the following lap.

Lap 21, Martin Truex Jr is in the pits from 2nd place. They will also cycle the power to try and fix his mechanical issue. Lap 22, Kyle Busch is on pit road with Denny Hamlin. New leader, Erik Jones.

Lap 24, penalty issued. Dale Earnhardt Jr, too fast entering. Erik Jones is in the pits. He hands the lead to Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

15 to go in stage 1. Kyle Busch is now 5 seconds behind leader Ricky Stenhouse Jr, who still hasn’t pitted. A lap later, Stenhouse to the pits. Matt Kenseth is now the lone car that hasn’t been to the pits in this cycle.

10 to go, Kyle Busch has caught Matt Kenseth. At the same time, they’ve caught a pack of lapped cars. Kyle Busch doesn’t rush it. He slows down and waits for the right time. Busch pulls along side Kenseth down the front-straight, new leader. That traffic allowed Truex to catch both of them. Kyle pulls Truex around Kenseth as well.

4 to go, Kenseth is on pit road. Kyle Busch leads Martin Truex Jr by 1 second. Ky Busch wins stage 1.

Stage 2

More pit road penalties, this time Denny Hamlin is the offender. Matt Kenseth stayed out on track. He leads, Kyle Busch lines up 2nd.

Green flag, Matt Kenseth leads the field into turn 1. He got a big push from Martin Truex Jr. Meanwhile, dive bomb from Jamie McMurray, 3 wide for outside the top 5.

Matt Kenseth pulls out of line. An attempt to break the draft. Kyle Busch doesn’t need the inside, he drives to the outside! Kyle Busch back to the lead in turn 3.

Lap 60, trouble! Jimmie Johnson has backed it into the fence. Kasey Kahne was to his inside, Johnson pinched him. Right front to left rear contact might have cut the LR tire on the #48. He looped and backed it into the wall. Johnson’s spotter was calling “car low” but the messages wasn’t received in time to prevent teammate contact.

Jimmie Johnson states, “I think the #5 washed up.”

Green. Matt Kenseth gets a big push from Martin Truex Jr, this time on the inside. Again, Busch doesn’t need the inside. He clears the field on the outside in turn 1. Kenseth wiggles, he loses a position and stacks up the inside line. Harvick to 2nd.

Lap 64, Ryan Blaney is on pit road with fender damage and a tire rub, 4 tire stop. Jamie McMurray smells smoke in his cockpit.

Lap 71, caution. Debris has fallen from Kyle Larson. Possibly a driveshaft. The field pits. Brad Keselowski gambles on a 2 tire pit stop, he leads them off pit road. Denny Hamlin failed to maintain speed on the front row. Austin Dillon will become the control car to the green.

Green, Denny Hamlin gets the jump anyway. He clears Dillon and slides in front before the entry to turn 1. The restart is under review. Kyle Busch nearly lost it! He made it to 2nd. Brad Keselowski was on his bumper int turn 1. That sent him into an aero drift up the race track. Busch falls to 7th.

13 to go in stage 2. Martin Truex Jr is running down Denny Hamlin. Older tires and less fuel for Hamlin. He pitted at lap 59, everyone else pitted on lap 71. Hamlin “might” make it to the end of the stage, but he likely won’t make it to lap 102 when pit road opens.

11 to go, Truex is looking under Hamlin off turn 2. Truex drives all the way to the apron, making the side draft difficult for Hamlin. New leader, Martin Truex Jr.

3 to go, Martin Truex Jr, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Joey Logano and 5+ more are both on pit road! They don’t care about stage points. They want the win.

Clint Bowyer now leads Brad Keselowski and Danica Patrick. Clint Bowyer wins stage 2 at Pocono Raceway! That’s his first career NASCAR stage win.

Clint Bowyer comments on the early pit stop from the leaders, “I thought they were crazy.”

Stage 3

Green flag on the final stage. Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr line up on the front row. Truex Jr gets the jump on the outside line. He beats Hamlin to turn 1. Kyle Busch slots in 3rd.

40 to go, Martin Truex Jr leads Denny Hamlin by a full second. Kyle Busch runs 3rd. Kyle Busch was dominant early in this race. Now, that’s not the case.

That stage win must have excited Clint Bowyer. He’s been picking off car after car since the restart. He currently runs 7th.

37 to go, Matt Kenseth is on pit road. Kevin Harvick mimics him the next lap as well a Joey Logano, Denny Hamlin and Clint Bowyer. Penalty: Too fast entering, Joey Logano.

34 to go, Martin Truex Jr is in. He hands over the lead to Kyle Busch. Denny Hamlin’s pit crew have made the move for the #11. Hamlin passed Truex during the pit cycle.

More penalties for Joey Logano. The team added fuel while serving their penalty. That’s not allowed. Another pass through.

26 to go, Kyle Busch is on pit road. He’s mixing up the strategy. The team decided they couldn’t beat Truex on a quick pit stop. Instead, they are now going to pray for a caution. If the field bunches up, his tires will be 8 laps fresher. New leader, Brad Keselowski.

20 to go, this is shaping up to be a great finish. Denny Hamlin currently runs 4th. He has Kevin Harvick all over his bumper. All 3 cars ahead will need to pit. In fact, all 3 are in this lap. New leader, Denny Hamlin. At the same time, Kyle Busch is the fastest car on track. He made the delta to Truex disappear in one corner. Kyle Busch to 3rd.

17 to go, Denny Hamlin has caught lapped traffic. He’s slowing. Kevin Harvick closes 10 car lengths. He has a massive run off turn 3. Harvick to the inside, he completed the pass in turn 1. But Kyle Busch has caught both of them, he’s under Hamlin as well. Busch to 2nd.

Kyle Busch is all over Kevin Harvick. A bump at the exit of turn 3. Kevin Harvick pushes up the racetrack. Kyle Busch drives under and to the lead.

1 to go, Kyle Busch leads Kevin Harvick by 6 seconds. Gone.

Kyle Busch wins at Pocono Raceway! It’s his first win at Pocono Raceway and the 100th NASCAR win for Toyota.

Kyle Busch, “I never thought this day would happen. Such an awesome racecar! We’ve been fighting all year long. Just wasn’t sure why or what’s next.” He continued, “It’s MARS hometown. Just down the road where they make all these awesome M&M’s.”
