Watkins Glen Results – August 5, 2017 – NASCAR Xfinity Series

Watkins Glen results from August 5th, 2017 featuring the NASCAR Xfinity Series

Today, the NASCAR Xfinity Series goes road course racing. Quite possibly, they may also go rain racing. Wet tires are in the pit lane and weather is in the area. Just before drivers climbed into their cars, drizzle was falling.

Stage 1 is 20 laps, stage 2 is also 20 laps. The final stage is 42 laps. 82 laps around the twisty bits of Watkins Glen International. It’s a full field of Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers. Some love it, others hate it. Either way, it’s changing in 2018.

Stage 1

Green flag, Kyle Busch and Joey Logano will lead the field down the hill and into turn 1. Logano locks up the right front on the inside line. Busch powers around the outside, they rub doors heading to turn 2. Busch is nearly clear by turn 2, he leaves room for Logano and completes the pass in turn 3 where he’s transitioned to the inside line.

Lap 5, Kyle Busch still leads, .5 seconds head. Brad Keselowski is charging through the field, he’s up to 3rd.

Caution. Spencer Gallagher is parked next to the pitlane wall. He made contact with JJ Yaley at the entry to the bus stop. The flat left rear was activated several corners later. No damage.

Green flag, this time Kyle Busch gets a much better jump over Logano. They both lock up in turn 1. Logano at his RR quarter panel in turn 2. Kyle Busch again gets the job done in 3.

11 to go in stage 1. At this point the highest running NXS regular is Justin Allguier. He runs 6th. The top 5, all MENCS drivers. However, engine troubles on the #42 of Kyle Larson. He’s dropping through the field with a loss of speed through the straight bits.

Brad Keselowski is all over his teammate Joey Logano. He’s after 2nd as Kyle Busch begins to drive away from both of them. Keselowski drives to his bumper at the entry of turn 5. Logano jumps the curb at the exit, sideways. Keselowski has a run. He looks to the outside, blocked. Back to the inside, Keselowski outbrakes Logono in turn 6 and takes the position.

4 to go in stage 1, Kyle Busch spins! A wheel hop down the hill and into turn 1, self-spin. He had a 2 second lead, He rejoins the field in 4th. Paul Menard, Ty Dillon, William Byron, Elliott Sadler and more are on pit road. Caution. JJ Yaley has stopped on the race track. No power.

Stage 2

Green flag, Daniel Hemric and Cole Custer lead them to green. A bit of wheel spin from Cole Custer stacks up the outside line. Kevin Harvick is all over Hemric. A bump draft into turn 1, he pushes Hemric to the lead.

Wheel hop from Kevin Harvick. He’s sideways at the center of the corner. He slides, spins, collects Cole Custer. The track is blocked at the exit of turn 1. Both cars 360 and continue. Still green. Daniel Hemric leads Elliott Sadler.

16 to go in stage 2, battle for the lead. Paul Menard gets a run off turn 5. He pulls out of the draft at the entry to turn 6. Menard takes the inside line to the lead.

13 to go, Cole Custer is on pit road. 9 to go, Kyle Busch restarted 28th. He now runs 11th, +17. Brad Keslowski runs 2nd. He wants the lead.

7 to go, Daniel Hemric is on pit road. At the same time, Stephen Young has blown up at the flagstand. Caution.

Green, Paul Menard lead the field to green. Joey Logano is on his bumper. Brad Keselowski has a lane to himself on the outside. He swings around Logano and behind Menard. Keselowski has touble leaving turn 5. Logano gets a run, they run side-by-side through turn 6. Logano is transferred from the outside line to the inside in turn 7. Logano takes the position back.

Final lap, Kyle Busch has caught all of them. But runs out of time to get the stage win.

Paul Meanrd wins stage 2 a Watkins Glen.

Stage 3

Green flag, 42 to go. The front of the field remained on the race track. They will pick up where they left off. Paul Menard and Joey Logano run side-by-side in turn 1. Brad Keselowski is on the bumper of Menard. Busch is on the bumper of Logano. Logano gets loose, stacks up the outside line. That allows Keselowski through and allows Allgaier to slide around Busch.

Brad Keselowsi is after the lead. He peaks out of line. Multiple times. A look at the lead but he doesn’t pull the trigger.

Lap 47, Brad Keselowski gets a run off turn 5. He doesn’t pull the move in turn 6. Instead, he swings to the inside at turn 7. New leader, Brad Keselowski.

49 to go, the runner position has changed. Move Kyle Busch to 2nd. 1.7 second up the road sits the leader.

50 to go, both Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano are on pit road. Green flag stop, final stop. Kyle Busch picks up the lead. The Logano team is slow on the right side.

Lap 54, Kyle Busch is in the pits for his final stop. Brendan Gaughan is now the leader. Busch re-enters the tracks just ahead of Keselowski.

21 to go, Gaughan hits pit road. The final pit cycle is complete. Kyle Busch leads Keselowski by 2.2 seconds. Keselowski was told to go get him. However, at the same time, the team is thinking ahead. They said if you don’t think you can get him. Hang back, save tires. If they get a late race restart, maybe Keselowski will have better managed tires.

13 to go, Kyle Busch leads Keselowski by 2.5 seconds.

12 to go, spin in turn 5. The #90 continues rolling. More trouble, Tifft and Bilicki tangle in the bus stop. They continue, still no caution.

6 to go, Casey Mears is out of fuel. He’s coasting around turn 5. There’s no way he’ll make it to pit road. Caution.

Green flag, 3 lap shootout. Kyle Busch gets a great restart. He clears the Penske machines by 2 car lengths before the braking zone in turn 1. Keselowski slots in 2nd.

2 to go, the race is for 2nd. Logano has a fender on Keselowski in turn 2. Keselowski leaves room. Logano puts Keselowski in an aero loose situation. A wiggle from Keselowski, move Logano to 2nd.

1 to go, Brennan Poole is in the wall in turn 7. No caution yet. Poole gets it moved off the racing line.
