NASCAR goes road course racing. This week, qualifying has one less round. Two rounds of NASCAR Cup Series qualifying before we have a pole sitter.

The top 12 will advance to the final round and make a run at the pole.

2017 The Glen Starting Lineup - Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series

Round 1

11 minutes remain in round 1. Currently, Jamie McMurray sits at the top of the board with a time of 70.041.

Years ago, Jamie McMurray bought his first go kart and went kart racing. I recall a day in Shawano, WI where McMurray and I spent all day running practice laps in shifter karts.

Why was he doing that that? Simply to hone his road racing skills. 10 years later, it’s paying dividends in New York via Watkins Glen qualifying.

6 minutes remain, Martin Truex Jr to the top of the board. Joey Logano sits on the cut line. Kasey Kahne sits 13th, one spot out.

4 minutes remain, Suarez jumps to 3rd. That bumps Logano out and puts Clint Bowyer on the cut line. Bowyer is on track. 10th, 11th, 12th are all on track. Matt Kenseth jums from 27th to 7th. Ryan Blaney to 8th. Chris Buescher to 11th!

2 minutes remain, Chase Elliott to the top of the board. Kurt Busch is now on the cut line. Kevin Harvick is 13th.

1 minute remains, AJ Allmendinger was outside the top 20 on his first run. The 2nd run jumps him to 10th. Johnson to 11th. AJ back to 11th. Michael McDowell 13th.

Ryan Newman has spun. Joey Logano was outside the top 20. He jumps to 13th, just short of the cut line.

Watkins Glen Round 1 Qualifying Results: 1. Chase Elliott (69.958); 2. Martin Truex Jr (70.005); 3. Jamie McMurray (70.041); 4. Daniel Suarez; 5. Kyle Busch; 6. Brad Keselowski; 7. Kyle Larson; 8. Denny Hamlin; 9. Erik Jones; 10. Clint Bowyer; 11. Jimmie Johnson; 12. AJ Allmendinger;

Round 2

Kyle Busch is the first car in track in the final round of Watkins Glen qualifying. It’s a time of 69.490 for Busch. That’s the fastest lap of the weekend. A full second quicker than his time in round 1.

Brad Keselowski went out early. However, he bails early on the lap and heads back to pit road without setting a time.

Denny Hamlin radio, “What happened to my brakes? I have to pump it 6-7 time just to get some brakes.”

1 minute remains in the final round, AJ Allmendinger and Brad Keselowski are on track. Denny Hamlin has not turned a time, he remains on pit road.

Kyle Busch will start from the pole in today’s NASCAR race at The Glen.

Kyle Busch, “That was pretty good.”
