Ray Evernham makes a case for less NASCAR rules

Ray Evernham: “We gotta make the cars less sensitive.”

Ray Evernham was the king of exposing all the loopholes in the rulebook.

Since his day, NASCAR has tried to plug them all. Now, the rulebook is 5 miles thick. It’s filled with asterisks and 10 pt font.

“I’m not trying to be controversial,” Ray Everham opened up the discussion on Sirius XM Speedway.

“They’ve got a big job in front of them. To get these rules to the point, to where we’re not having encumbered wins over a few hundred thousandths on a rear end housing.”

“This whole skew thing… We gotta make the cars less sensitive. We’re working on the system rather than the disease.”

“We can’t keep writing rules about, ‘These things have to be together.’ or ‘It’s gotta be torqued to this deal.’ because then all of the guys are just going to continue to try and figure out how to make it better. If it makes that big of a difference in the car.”

We’ve gotta make these cars numb

-Ray Evernham

“We’ve gotta make these cars numb. Numb down the aerodynamics. I don’t care if we gotta cut the quarter panels up 12 inches. Do somethin’ to take away that sideforce.”

His point is that if you take the aerodynamics away, it wouldn’t be as beneficial for teams to push the boundaries. It wouldn’t matter.

“We gotta numb these cars up and make less rules. Rather than more rules. The fans that I talk to are getting tired of the controversy. People want to be entertained. They don’t want all of the controversy.”

Mr. France has said that fans need to know the winner when they leave the racetrack. NASCAR still applies that same concept today.

“But that was in the 50’s, 60’s. Now there’s so much social media. People can be disqualified and you can let people know why.”

“We’ve gotta make these rules solid and we gotta make the cars more numb. And we gotta stop the controversy.”

The rules box

“If you got a rule. Someone’s always going to push the limit.”

“When you make that box so tight and there’s so many rules, somebody’s gunna break ’em every week.”

“There’s gotta be a certain list of things. If you mess with, you’re out. The other stuff, guy’s are always gunna be on the templates. But the reason guys are on the templates is because it makes such a huge difference aerodynamically.”

“We gotta go back to that time where if you knock your quarter panel over a quarter of an inch, it’s just not that big of a deal.”
