Upon entry to the dogleg, the was an obstacle. A metal staircase, used for officials to get from outside track limits, to the infield. The ladder came down off the wall, from under the flagstand, with the final step landing on the racetrack itself.

When Erik Jones came onto the front straight, he clipped it. The right front fender was crushed. The best part, it was all caught on camera. Watch the video below.

“It definitely was a surprise,” Erik Jones told Motorsport.

“I knew I’d hit something obviously but had no idea what it was or that it was as big as it was. I would have never guessed it was some stairs. It was definitely a weird way to start the day,” the Furniture Row Racing Toyota driver concluded.
