Richmond Raceway promo video mirrors clip from Days of Thunder

Cue awesome….

“I’m going to give you a computer that’s low to the ground,” the Richmond Raceway simulator opens up it’s promo video. You should be laughing already.

For those that didn’t catch it… That’s a twist on the garage scene from the movie Days of Thunder. But, it gets better…

“When I get you wired, programed and calibrated you’re going to be ready to go out on that software,” the actor says with a straight face.

That’s another twist on a line from Days of Thunder. Below is the actual quote from the movie.

“When I get your primed, painted and weighed. You’ll be ready to go out on that race track,”Robert Duvall states as Harry Hogge.

In fact, the entire scene is in reference to the movie. Watch the videos below comparing the two clips. You’ll notice every line mirrors the movie. A carbon copy down to the color of the sunlight glow seeping through the garage windows.

The two actors start in the same position, walk in the same direction around the car and end in the same spot. The outfits are the same, down to the color of the hats. In addition, the screen ratio, is also the exact same. It’s the small details that make the difference.

Days of Thunder is a movie that came out in 1990. The film features a stock car racing driver, Tom Cruise who progressed from open wheel sprint car racing to NASCAR. The film grossed $82 million at the box office.

“The state of the art racing simulator showcases a design that ties Richmond’s history and future. The car design is a nod to Richmond’s past with inspiration from the new branding of the track,” Richmond Raceway explains.

“The simulator sports a No. 46, which represents 1946 the year the track was built and held its first race. The color scheme of red, black, and white incorporates the new Richmond brand identity,” Richmond Raceway stated.

The simulator is built out of an actual NASCAR race car. The car was originally driven by Eric McClure. The chassis was purchased and converted into one of the world’s greatest racing simulators in less than 6 months.

The guts of the project were installed by Sim Seats. They are a Richmond-based company that specializes in the design of sim racing hardware.

The video is a promotional video for Richmond Raceway’s eSports program. They are set to host a full season of online racing. The season will run from February 11 to November 18.
