NASCAR VP discusses the overtime line and number of attempts

NASCAR VP: “I mean, you never want to see that many cars torn up, for sure. But, we want the race to finish under green, if we can.”

The NASCAR Xfinity Series featured 5 attempts at a Green, White Checkered finish at Daytona International Speedway. In the end, it resulted in the closest finish in NASCAR National Series history.

In the past, NASCAR placed a limit on overtime attempts. That limit has since been removed and the NXS took 5 tries to complete the race under green.

The overtime line has also been moved. It’s back at the start-finish line. No longer is there an overtime line down the back straight. This means, getting to the end of the back-straight isn’t good enough for a completed lap.

This means when NASCAR takes the green in overtime, they need to make it all the way through turns 1-2 as well as 3-4. last year, they only needed to make it to the entry of turn 3. Now, they need to make it back to the start finish line and take the white flag.

Moving the overtime line is what created 5 G-W-C attempts at Daytona.

Will NASCAR look into that?

“Well, we always discuss everything,” NASCAR executive Steve O’Donnell stated on the Morning Drive via Sirius XM NASCAR Radio.

“My opinion, that will be a 5 second conversation. We’re happy.”

“I mean, you never want to see that many cars torn up, for sure. But, we want the race to finish under green, if we can.”

“If a fan is sending in a tweet or something saying, ‘That was too long.’ I’d show him the majority of the fans who’ve said, ‘Finish this race under green, please.’ ”

“It took a long time. But, ultimately, that race [with] the racing that took place all day long deserves to finish under green.”

“We wouldn’t have seen the closest finish in our history. And we wouldn’t have seen Tyler Reddick in victory lane.”

“It took awhile but I’m glad we were able to finish under green.”
