Bristol Race Results: April 16, 2018 – NASCAR Cup Series

Bristol Motor Speedway results from April 16, 2018 featuring the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series in Bristol, Tennessee

Weather is in the area. But, the track is temporarily dry as the rain covers are being removed. The green flag is set to drop on the Food City 500 in Bristol, TN.

Kyle Busch will lead them to the green. Kurt Busch qualified outside pole. However, he’ll go to the back in his backup car along with Kevin Harvick and Jimmie Johnson. Johnson had an unapproved tire change.

125 laps in stage 1, 125 in stage 2 and 250 laps in stage 3 will complete the 500 lap race. NASCAR is set to go short track racing in the hills of Tennessee.

Stage 1
Bristol Motor Speedway

Green flag, Kyle Busch gets the jump on Keselowski. He leads by 2 car lengths into turn 1.

He’s clear by 6 as lap 1 is complete.

Lap 4, Landon Cassill slipped out of the bottom lane at the exit of turn 4. Elliott is the first car into the scene, he makes contact with McDowell as he slides across the track. Truex, Almirola, McDowell, Suarez, Elliott, Ragan, Kennington and more all get damage. Elliott got the worst of it, heavy right rear damage.

Green, Kyle Busch lifts off the throttle right before the green then stabs the pedal. Stenhouse is caught off guard, he falls from 2nd to 4th before turn 1. Ryan Blaney to 2nd.

Lap 17, Ryan Blaney is catching the leader. He looks low on the #18, Busch leaves him the lane on the bottom. New leader, Ryan Blaney. Spin at the back. McMurray looked low on Allmendinger and he tried to close the door anyway. Allmendinger went around.

Green, Blaney gets the jump on the outside. He pulls Logano with him as Busch falls to 3rd. Kyle Busch cannot hold it on the bottom. Nearly every lap the car over rotates in the center of the corner. He rear end steps out and Busch can’t get to the throttle. Lap 32, Busch has fallen to 10th.

Lap 45, the rain drops are falling but they’re still green. Jimmie Johnson thinks he has a tire going down. He’s riding it out as there’s a competition caution at lap 50.

Lap 47, the caution is out for weather. Lap 50, the red flag is out. 40 minutes later, the track is dry and they’re rolling. Blaney is 1st in and 1st off. Kyle Larson is +3 at pit exit, he’s off pit lane 2nd.

Green, Blaney gets the jump on the outside line. Larson falls to 5th. Stenhouse is around at the front! Erik Jones looked to his inside for 2nd, Jones got loose, slid up the track and clipped Stenhouse in the left rear. The caution is out.

Green, Blaney gets the jump and Logano holds onto 2nd. Team Penske holds 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th at Bristol. Kasey Kahne has cracked the top 10.

Lap 100, the groove in moving up the track. They aren’t in the third lane just yet. However, the middle is drivable.

20 to go, Larson is coming. In 3-4, he’s started to use the diamond. He enters high then cuts to the bottom on the exit. At the front, the leader is glued to the bottom.

8 to go, Keselowski is coming! Ryan Blaney switches lanes. He moves to the top to throw a block. Spin in front of the leaders! Buescher had a run from lane 3, Bayne jumped from the bottom to the top on corner exit. Bayne had no idea Buescher was up there. Big pile up, Blaney comes into the scene with nowhere to go. The leader is out of the race and the red flag is out.

The pit lane is open. Keselowski stays out along with the rest of the top 6. The rest of the field hits the pits. Kyle Busch beats Kyle Larson to the pit exit.

1 lap shootout. Green, Larson is making it 3 wide to get back to the front. Keselowski wins stage 1!

Stage 2
Bristol Motor Speedway

Green, Larson gets the jump on Erik Jones. Kurt Busch slips through to 2nd. Kyle Busch slips into the marbles and loses 3 spots. Finchum is around but the race is still green.

Lap 155, Trevor Bayne was working the higher part of the race track. He got back to the gas in the center of the corner and the backend stepped around. He was just a little too high.

Kurt Busch, Johnson, Keselowski and 20 more hit the pit lane. The rain is falling and the red flag is back out.

Green, Larson gets the jump on the outside. He’s clear by 6 car lengths as they return to the flagstand.

Lap 188, Kurt Busch has a flat. He abruptly pulls to the apron. He slides back into the banking but saves it and heads to pit road. At the front, Larson leads by 6 seconds. However, the caution and then the red is back out for rain. Larson’s lead is gone once again.

204 laps are complete. The race has been postponed and will resume on Monday.

A day later…

Pit lane is open. Larson stays out on the track as did 4 other cars. Kurt Busch will not be able to get the wave around, the outside pole sitter is still trapped 3 laps down.

21 hours later, the lights are out. Green flag, Larson leads into turn 1. He gets loose and Kyle Busch is all over him for the lead. Larson opens a gap off turn 2.

18 to go to stage 2, Larson leads Johnson by 2.3 seconds. Kyle Busch faded to 5th early in the run. He’s now all over Johnson for 2nd. Busch puts the bumper to Johnson. The #48 skates up the track, move Busch to 2nd.

Keselowski is around Busch. They’re both running down Kyle Larson. The leader is stuck behind lappers and Keselowski has new left side tires. 7 laps to go, the #2 puts the bumper to the #42 in turn 3. Now, Keselowski is stuck behind lappers. Keselowski pushes Lajoie into Bayne, both lappers go up the hill and the new leader drives by both of them.

Brad Keselowski wins stage 2!

Stage 3

Everyone to the pit lane. Keselowski is first in and first off.

Green, Hamlin gives Keselowski a push across the line. Keselowski selects the middle line in turn 1. Hamlin looks to lane 3. He’s got a run off the corner. Keselowski leaves him a lane and Hamlin shoots to the lead.

Lap 266, Hamlin pulls to the pits from the lead! Loose wheel for Hamlin. Johnson gets handed the lead but Keselowski takes is back near instantly.

Lap 288, Keselowski and Busch race for the lead. Bumper to bumper through lap traffic. Larson has caught the both of them. Keselowski moves high. Larson is on the bottom, he drives right by. Larson has returned to the lead.

176 to go, Larson tries to diamond the corner. Newman was rolling the bottom. As Larson came down the banking he spins across the nose of Newman. The leader is around but he makes no other contact as he slides in front of the field.

Pit stops for all, Kyle Busch leads them back to green.

Green, Kyle Busch gets the jump. Johnson to 2nd. Keselowski cannot get moving in the early part of a run.

147 to go, Reed Sorenson is around. He turned sideways right at the entry to the corner and backed it into the wall while running 27th. Everyone hits pit road except Daniel Suarez. Harvick has returned to the pit lane with a loose wheel.

Green, Suarez leads into turn 1. Keselowski is coming with new tires. Keselowski looks to the outside in turn 3. With a run off turn 4, Keselowski returns to the lead. Bubba Wallace puts the fender to Suarez for 2nd.

127 to go, Bubba Wallace puts the bumper to Keselowski off turn 4. He looks under Keselowski for the lead into turn 1. Bubba Wallace leads!

120 to go, Kyle Busch puts the bumper to Wallace. The #43 gives him the bottom in the next corner. Kyle Busch back to the lead.

111 to go, the rain is falling at Bristol and the caution is out. Stenhouse, Suarez, Harvick and Logano hit the pit lane.

Green, Kyle Busch gets the jump on Larson. Busch opens up a gap of 10+ car lengths.

78 to go, Larson has evaporated the gap to the leader. Busch and Larson are both glued to the bottom lane as they race through lap traffic and rain drops fall lightly on the speedway.

62 to go, Larson diamonds turns 3-4. He gets a run down the front stretch. Busch heads to the bottom in turn 1 with Larson inches from the rear bumper. No contact but Busch skates up the track. Larson takes the lead.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr has climbed to 4th. He has tires that are 20 laps newer. That’s about the fourth or fifth time that Stenhouse has climbed from the back to the front. Brad Keselowski is falling through the field. He’s saying he has a suspension part failure.

31 to go, the Busch thinks his tire’s about to blow. Keselowski has a flat left front. The caution is out. The leaders hit the pit lane. Larson is first in and first off.

Green, Larson gets the jump. Stenhouse is around Busch and into 2nd. Stenhouse is beating his rear bumper off. Stenhouse looks low into turn 3. Larson forces it to the bottom. He wasn’t clear but forces his way in there. Stenhouse and Larson come off side by side. Larson holds him off on the outside lane. Stenhouse fades, Busch is back to 2nd.

10 to go, Busch is closing on the leader. Traffic is ahead. Larson gets loose off turn 4. Busch is all over his bumper. Busch puts the bumper to Larson and the #42 skates up the hill.

1 to go, Larson drives it deep into turn 3. Not enough, Kyle Busch wins at Bristol Motor Speedway!
