Kyle Busch comments on the restrictor plate for Charlotte

Kyle Busch: “That’s not what I signed up to be a NASCAR driver for. To continue to scrunch the field up and take advantages away from those that are fast.”

Mile and half racing has been a snooze fest in the eyes of a lot of NASCAR fans. Specifically, those fans that crave side-by-side racing.

It’s aero racing. The air simply prohibits cars from getting close enough to make a pass. The faster they’re going, the greater the effect. When NASCAR goes to a short track at slower speeds, they put on a great show. But, the NASCAR schedule is about 35% 1.5-mile tracks. Those shows have to be better.

NASCAR is trying something new when the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series heads to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the All-Star race. It’s close to the same package the NASCAR Xfinity Series tested at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a race that was significantly improved from a viewers perspective.

First, they will slow them down and lessen the aero effects. Then, they will add aero ducts at the front of the car which will provide more air to the front nose of the trailing car. In addition, the 2014 splitter will be used in conjunction with a larger rear spoiler to create a larger draft down the straights.

What does Kyle Busch think about the NASCAR All-Star package?

“I’m not a particular fan of it. But, we certainly do need to orchestrate some better racing at mile and a half tracks,” Kyle Busch says from the media center.

“Especially at Charlotte. It just hasn’t been one of our best race tracks since the repave with working multiple lanes. It’s pretty pretty single file there for a long time. I don’t know why. You would think with age on asphalt, it would continue to get better. It just hasn’t.”

“We continue to bring out more things to try. I’m not a particular fan of slowing the lead car down and bringing that guy back to the rest of the field.”

“But, if that’s what [will] create some action and some better racing then so be it. As far as us doing that every single week — Now, I gotta give it a chance first to see what it’s like before I completely throw it out.”

“But, that’s not what I signed up to be a NASCAR driver for. To continue to scrunch the field up and take advantages away from those that are fast.”

Do you have an idea of what NASCAR should try on the mile and a half tracks?

“No. I don’t have any better ideas than any that are being thrown out there. So, I can’t complain I guess if I don’t have any better ideas.”

“I think we’re trying to orchestrate something that doesn’t quite exist. The trucks sometimes put on a good race. They’re aerodynamically challenged and you can kinda draft up on a guy.”

“From what I understand, they’re shooting for 165 mph. That’s way slower than a truck runs. So, that’s gunna bunch us up even more.”

“We’ll see what it creates. I don’t know what it’s going to create.”

How much do you pay attention to new rules and such?

“I can’t control any of it. My focus is just on what I can control.”

“I hear the other stuff. But, it’s in one ear and out the other. I work hard to be the smartest, bestest race car driver I can be with no matter what package is developed on put out there on the race track.”

“We’ve tried so many different things over the course of the years. I’m not so sure that you can fabricate racing into being anything better than what exists.”

“People [talk] about how great it was back in the day… Man, you had 2 guys, 3 guys on the lead lap sometimes. Richard Petty would win races by two laps at some places.”

“Now you have 25 cars on the lead lap. Competition’s as close as it’s ever been and we’re complaining about it because there’s lack of competition.”

“I don’t know what you expect to be competition unless you want the last guy to be able to be the first place guy. There’s always gunna be a last place guy. It’s been in F1 forever. It’s been in NASCAR forever. Xfinity Series forvever. Truck Series forever.”

“Nobody’s happy. Be miserable, like me and then nothing’ll surprise you.”

“Everybody wants the opposite of what they see or what they get,” Kyle Busch concluded.
