Richmond Raceway first practice results featuring the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series on April 20, 2018
Friday practice, the condensed NASCAR weekend begins. Two practice rounds and qualifying are on the schedule today for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series at the Richmond Raceway short track.

Richmond Raceway has changed a bit from their last trip to the speedway. A larger tunnel has been installed at the entry to turn 1. To install it they had to dig a hole in the track surface. Tunnels under the race track typically create bumps. The new patch in the track sits right at the entry to turn 1.

Kyle Larson jumps right to the top fo the board early on in the first Richmond Practice session.
“It’s plowing tight. Something is not correct,” Denny Hamlin radio.
Right at the end of practice, all 3 of the Penske cars hit the track. However, Chase Elliott jumps to the top of the board with just 2:30 left on the board. He knocks Larson back to 2nd, Larson’s lap has stood for most of the session to that point.

Up next is final practice. There’s only 30 minutes between the sessions. In addition, there is no practice session following qualifying later today. This weekend is an anomaly to the typical weekend schedule with one less practice session available.
