Dover International Speedway results from May 6, 2018 featuring the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series

Today, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series will take on Miles the Monster. Dover International Speedway is a 1-mile concrete oval, the oldest racing surface on the schedule.

120 laps in stage 1, 120 more in stage 2. 160 laps in stage 3 will complete the 400 lap race.

Kyle Larson was positioned to lead the field to the green flag. However, failed pre-race inspections the team was sent to the tail. Instead, Truex Jr moved to the inside front row while Harvick will start on the outside. Bowman was also penalized.

Stage 1 – Report

Green flag, side by side into turn 1.

Truex takes an easy entry as Harvick is hard on the gas around the top. Truex was off the throttle early but he gets back into it quicker. Truex and Harvick are side by side off turn 2. Harvick confirms the lead into turn 3 and off turn 4.

Lap 4, spin in turn 4. Michael McDowell is around. The backend stepped out after contact from Bubba Wallace on the rear bumper. He tiptoed sideways around the apron, no contact.

Green, Harvick is clear before turn 1. He leads Truex by 3 car lengths off turn 2.

Lap 15, Kyle Busch is complaining about a vibration. Busch runs in the top 5. He just

Lap 21, Corey Lajoie is up in smoke. This is the second engine this team has lost an engine this weekend at Dover.

Most everyone hits the pit lane. Larson and Bowman remain on the track, they’ll lead the field to green. Clint Bowyer had air gun issues, he has to return to the pit lane.

Green, Bowman dives into turn 1. He won the race to the bottom in turn 1 from the outside lane.

Lap 52, Brad Kesleowski has been chasing down Alex Bowman since the last restart. 20 laps fresher tires, he’s finally there. Keselowski drives by on the outside with ease, new leader.

30 to go in stage 1, Truex has climbed to the rear bumper of Keselowski. There’s traffic ahead. truex noses past Keselowski on the bottom. Truex is clear by a 1/2 car length off turn 2 but Truex leaves Keselowski room at the top as Keselowski has a bunch of momentum from the high side. Keselowski powers back to the lead on the outside. They continue to race through lapped traffic.

24 to go, Truex hits the pit lane, he thinks he has a flat. Larson is in as well, he can’t make it on fuel. Uncontrolled tire for Kyle Larson, he’ll serve a green flag pass through penalty.

14 to go, Kyle Busch is saving fuel. Keselowski is saving fuel as well. Harvick is on the rear bumper of the leader. Harvick looks to the outside, no fuel saving needed for the #4, he takes the lead.

2 to go, Karvick leads. Hamlin, Jones and Newman are all out of fuel. Hamlin is trying to cost to the line. Jones and Newman hit pit lane and go a lap down.

Harvick wins stage 1. Most of the field is coasting around the apron as they trail the pace car.

Stage 2 – Report

The field hits the pit lane. Karvick is first in and first off. Truex takes the wave around. He nearly raced his way back to the free pass position after a flat tire toward the end of stage 1, he didn’t make it. Uncontrolled tire for William Byron.

Green, Harvick clears Keselowski into turn 1.

Lap 150, Derrike Cope is around and into the wall. The caution is out. The field hits the pit lane. Brad Keselowski wins the race off the pit lane.

Green, Keselowski doesn’t get a great jump at the line. However, he still powers around Harvick to control the lead from the high side off turn 2.

Lap 180, Kevin Harvick is looking for a lane by the current leader of Keselowski. Kyle Busch is running 3rd and catching them both. Busch is 2.7 seconds back.

Lap 188, Harvick is still there. Every time Harvick gets close to Keselowski the front end washes up the banking. Harvick is now attempting to run the opposite lane of Keselowski in every corner to get some air to his nose.

lap 200, Brad Keselowski’s entry into turn 1 is pinched as he puts Ty Dillon a lap down. Harvick pulls right to the rear bumper as his entry arc wasn’t hindered. Turn 3, Harvick looks to the inside, Keselowski leaves the lane open. Harvick powers by on the inside off turn 4, new leader.

Kevin Harvick cruises to the stage 2 win.

Stage 3 – Report

The field hits the pit lane. Harvick is first in and first off.

Green, Harvick wins the race into turn 1 with ease. Johnson leads the back half of the field to the pit road.

Lap 147, Cody Ware is in the wall, caution.

Green, Harvick is again clear before turn 1.

130 to go, Kyle Busch is up in smoke! No caution. It’s a lap delayed but the caution is out. Busch was running 3rd. Busch lost a driveshaft.

The field hits the pit lane. Keselowski and Logano take two tires. Harvick is off 3rd with 4 tires. Stenhouse and McMurray stayed out.

Green, McMurray wiggles on the bottom, they’re all over him. Stenhouse leads by 5 car lengths off turn 2. Bowyer looks low on Logano for 2nd. Stenhouse is 1.8 seconds up the road.

107 to go, Bowyer is all over Stenhouse for the lead. Stenhouse runs the high lane, Bowyer is right on the apron. Bowyer can get to him but he can’t get the drive off. Stenhouse wiggles in turn 4, Bowyer nearly completes the pass, not enough.

Lap 103, Stenhouse wiggles again off turn 4. Bowyer is all over his rear bumper, they might have made light contact. Bowyer dives to the bottom in turn 1. Stenhouse checks up early and lets him go.

85 to go, the caution is out. Rain has fallen on the speedway. The rain clouds have been here all day, the skies have finally opened. The red flag is out and they park the cars on pit road.

45 minutes later…

The engines have re-fired. Pit road is open. Bowyer is first in and first off, Harvick is off 2nd. Keselowski lost a ton of positions in the box. Kasey Kahne gets the free pass. Logano returns to the pit lane with a loose wheel.

Green, Bowyer and Harvick are even into turn 1. Bowyer wiggles in the middle of the corner but he’s still hard on the gas. Bowyer slots to the bottom, taking the bottom lane away. Harvick is on his bumper.

64 to go, Bowyer gets loose off turn 2. Harvick has a run. Harvick is looking high, Bowyer shuts the door. Back in turn 2, Harvick is again looking to the high side, he’s at his door this time. Bowyer has to leave the lane open, Harvick drives by and takes the lead on the outside.

25 to go, Harvick leads Bowyer by 4.7 seconds.

10 to go, Harvick leads by 6.44 seconds.

“Yes! This time don’t break his arm, Keelan,” Kevin Harvick issues a message to his son as he’s set to bring home another Miles the Monster trophy to the house back in North Carolina.

Clint Bowyer said his car felt really good in the early part of the run. That was a bad sign. The car loosened up throughout the long run. It was too loose to hold off Kevin Harvick.
