NASCAR team owner suffers broken jaw after Dover altercation

NASCAR crew member suspended following the assault

Lawrence Hayden and NASCAR Xfinity Series team owner Jerry Hattaway were involved in an altercation in the infied. It took place on Friday morning at Dover International Speedway.

The police report states that the former crew member began punching the co-owner of JP Motorsports. Repeated blows resulted in a broken jaw for the NASCAR Xfinity team owner.

Jerry Hattaway was first treated at the speedway medical center. He was then transported to a local hospital.

33-year-old, Hayden is a resident of Concord, North Carolina. He has been arrested and charged with second-degree assault. His bail was set at $500.

The altercation stemmed from “over issues pertaining to Hayden’s employment with the team,” Mark Hoffman stated, a spokesman with the Dover police department.

Court documents state that the altercation began as Hayden announced he was quitting his work with the team. From there, the engaged in a heated argument that resulted in punches being thrown.

JP Motorsports fields two cars in the NASCAR Xfinity Series. The #45 is driven full-time by Josh Bilicki. The #55 is a shared seat driven by Jennifer Jo Cobb and Stephen Leicht.

JPM is a new team to the NASCAR garage area. They have 7 races under their belt. They made their debut at Daytona International Speedway in February.

The new race team is based out of Escalon, California. Jerry and Phyllis Hattaway are the sole owners of the operation. The two owners formerly worked with Derrike Cope Racing in 2016. The cars are from Tri-Star Motorsports.

NASCAR Statement: “Crew member Lawrence Hayden has been indefinitely suspended from NASCAR following his arrest by the Dover Police Department. NASCAR will continue working with local law enforcement and will have no further comment at this time.”
