Storyline – Multi-zone tread tire enables Goodyear to give teams grip while enhancing durability:

Kansas Speedway is one of seven multi-zone tread tire tracks on the Cup schedule, which enables Goodyear to run a more heat and wear resistant compound on the inboard two inches of the tread, while running a more tractive compound on the outboard 10 inches.

Grip is always at a premium at Kansas. Goodyear brought a grip enhancement to the track for last season as it continued to tune to NASCAR’s lower downforce package. While Cup teams will run a new left-side tire code at this track this season, this tire features that same tread compound that was run at Kansas last year.

“We’re returning to Kansas with the same multi-zone right-side we ran there last season,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing.

“These cars are running tremendous speeds and that, combined with the camber settings in the front end, generates a lot of heat in the tire, which shows up most on the inboard of the right-front. Being able to protect that area with a more heat and wear resistant tread compound frees us up to give teams more grip with the outboard compound.”

“As NASCAR moved to a lower downforce rules package over the past several seasons, we continued to talk to teams and evaluate performance to look at where we could improve grip. We feel like we made a nice step toward that at Kansas last season, and we return with the same tread compounds in 2018.”

Notes – New left-side tire for Cup cars at Kansas: While teams in both the NASCAR Cup and Camping World Truck Series will run the same right-side tire code at Kansas this weekend, each series will have their own distinct left-side code . . . for the Cup cars, this is the same right-side tire code they ran twice at Kansas last season . . . this right-side is one of Goodyear’s multi-zone tread tires, with two tread compounds on the same tire – one on the inboard two inches for heat resistance (Endurance Zone) and one on the outboard 10 inches for grip (Traction Zone) . . . this right-side code is unique to Kansas . . . this is the first time Cup teams have run this left-side tire code . . . compared to what was run at Kansas last season, it features a construction update to bring it into line with what is run at other speedways . . . Cup teams will also run this left-side code at Charlotte the next two weeks . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Kansas . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.

Kentucky Speedway Tire Test

Upcoming tire test – Goodyear to test Kentucky next week: Goodyear has a one-day tire test scheduled for Kentucky Speedway next Tuesday (May 15) . . . teams (drivers) scheduled to participate are Richard Childress Racing (Ryan Newman), Furniture Row Racing (Martin Truex Jr.), Hendrick Motorsports (William Byron), Penske Racing (Joey Logano) and Stewart-Haas Racing (Clint Bowyer).

Notes – Trucks on new tire combination at Kansas: While teams in both the NASCAR Cup and Camping World Truck Series will run the same right-side tire code at Kansas this weekend, each series will have their own distinct left-side code . . . this is the first time Truck teams have run either of these two Goodyear tire codes . . . compared to what the Trucks ran at Kansas in 2017, this left-side code features a construction update to align with other speedways . . .

This right-side code puts the Trucks on a multi-zone tread tire at Kansas, where they ran a single tread compound tire last year . . . Goodyear’s multi-zone tread right-side tire features two tread compounds on the same tire — one on the inboard two inches for heat resistance (Endurance Zone) and one on the outboard 10 inches for grip (Traction Zone) . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Kansas . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
