Justin Allgaier says damage to his car caused the inspection failure

Today, NASCAR handed out a total of $187,500 in fines for all 3 divisions of the NASCAR National Series ladder. A whopping five L1 penalties were announced, three in the NASCAR Cup Series ranks and two in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

I’m not certain, but I would say this is the largest penalty day in the history of NASCAR from a financial standpoint. I would also say that five L1 penalties have never been handed out in a single week either.

Justin Allgaier drove to the win at Dover International Speedway in the NASCAR Xfinity Series with a brand new SiteOne sponsor. He collected the $100,000 Dash for Cash bonus award. However, he has since been hit with a penalty.

The JR Motorsports #7 team will keep the race winnings. But, the team have been docked 25 owner points and 25 driver points. Allgaier will not be able to use the win to help him advance in the playoffs. In addition, Crew Chief Jason Burdett was fined $25,000 and will sit out for the next two Xfinity Series race weekends.

Allgaier and teammate Elliott Sadler smashed doors and the wall as they came to the line. The #7 JR Motorsports drivers says that contact on the final lap is what led to the inspection failure at the NASCAR R&D Center.

20.14.2.h: Truck trailing arm spacer/pinion angle shim surfaces must be in complete contact at all points, at all times.

Allgaier is stating that the contact knocked the trailing arms off their mounting bracket. In the past, teams have played tricks with shims in this area of the car to help it turn through the corner. And, he might be right.

Justin Allgaier comments on the penalty

“Here are my thoughts on today’s penalties from NASCAR. We’ve been inspected & passed at the r&d center multiple times and we continue to work with Nascar to stay within the rules on a weekly basis. I feel very confident on how we follow the rule book!”

“I am really disappointed for my crew chief Jason Burdett, my team and all of JR Motorsports and our partners. These guys work hard week in and week out to produce awesome race cars that fall well within the guidelines.”

“Unfortunately, there was damage to the car coming to the checkered flag from hard racing, that I firmly believe was the factor in causing the infraction, We’ll miss Jason the next two races, but we’ll work hard to earn more victories and be there battling for the championship at the end of the season.”

Elliott Sadler came from aways back, drove it deep into the corner, bounced off the apron and up into Allgaier. This then pushed Allgaier hard into the wall, just a few feet before he crossed the finish line as the winner.
