Lightning caused a delay in setting up the inspection tent, multiple cars late to the track; Two practices combined into a single session; Water under the track

Due to lightning this morning, NASCAR was late to set up their inspection station at Kansas Speedway. As a result, multiple cars will likely be a little late to the track in just a few moments.

“We need to get through tech here. I’ve been anxiously awaiting. It looks like we’re going to wait a little longer,” Matt Kenseth told FS1 from the inspection line.

Also due to the weather, the entire schedule has been further condensed. Instead of two separate practices, it’s been morphed into a single 2.5 hour practice session. Pre-qualifying and post-qualifying practice will now take place in one single session ahead of qualifying. Teams will need to work on both qualifying and race trim, in a single session.

Weepers are an issue. With the rain, water is leaking out of the seams of the race track. It’s causing issues for the cars on the race track. It will continue to dry as the cars roll over them. So far, it hasn’t resulted any incidents.

NASCAR threw the caution. They brought out the drill and the saw. As they cut holes into the track surface there was pressured water under the track. The water escaped and practice resumed…

This is also the first time on track for Matt Kenseth. Jack Roush has pulled him from retirement. It’s an effort to help sort possible issues with Roush-Fenway racing cars.

Kenseth spent the majority of the practice session running single lap runs. He improved with each run.

With 25 minutes remaining, Erik Jones might be the first car on the track in qualifying trim. He jumps to the top of the board with a 29.247. Kyle Larson held the quickest time before that with a 29.306. Chase Elliott had the quickest race trim run with a 29.335.

The speeds are set to drop rapid fire…

10 minutes remain in the session, an old guy crashes the party. Kyle Busch jumps to the top of the board with a 29.163.

7 minutes remain, another old guy to the top. Harvick sets the pace with a 29.009.

He’s been untouchable, Harvick wins practice.

Next up is NASAR Truck Series qualifying. That will be followed by Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series qualifying. Tonight, the NASCAR Truck Series takes the green flag.
