Storyline – Goodyear tire set-up offers plenty of grip for All-Star rules package: NASCAR has designed a unique set of rules for this year’s Monster Energy All-Star race, based on what Xfinity cars ran at Indianapolis Motor Speedway last year. Some elements include running restrictor plates on the engines, a splitter on the front of the car that harkens back to the 2014 season, manufacturer-specific air ducts designed to minimize the aerodynamic disadvantage of not being in the lead and a six-inch tall spoiler with “ears” on each end that reach up to 12 inches to increase drag.

With all that, Goodyear will bring a tire set-up that combines speedway constructions robust enough to stand up to the loads generated by the track banking, with a right-side tire that is the same as the more tractive “Option” tire run in last year’s All-Star event.

“Our 2018 tire package for Charlotte features a revised left-side construction and a more tractive right-side compound than was our ‘Prime’ tire last year; in fact this right-side was what we ran as our ‘Option’ tire in 2017,” said Greg Stucker, Goodyear’s director of racing.

“Both factors will lead to more grip for the cars, which will help with the close quarters racing expected with this rules package. The All-Star race is the perfect time to try an alternate package on the Cup cars and combining it with our new, standard Charlotte tire recommendation will give NASCAR and the industry a good data point to evaluate.”

Notes – Kansas left-side paired with ’17 All-Star ‘Option’ right-side: Teams in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and Camping World Truck Series will run completely different tire set-ups at Charlotte this week . . . for Cup, this is the same right-side tire code they ran as the “Option” tire in last year’s All-Star race . . . this is the first time these teams have run this left-side tire code at Charlotte, though they did run it at Kansas last weekend . . . compared to what was run at Charlotte last year, this left-side features a construction update to bring it into line with what is run at other speedways . . . as on all NASCAR ovals greater than one mile in length, teams are required to run inner liners in all four tire positions at Charlotte . . . air pressure in those inner liners should be 12-25 psi greater than that of the outer tire.
