Danica Patrick will become the first female to host the sports awards show

Danica Patrick has announced that she will host the ESPY award show. The 26th annual awards show takes place on July 18 at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

She will become the first woman to host the sports awards show.

“I have a thing for doing things for the first time as the woman. So, I’m going to be the first woman to host the ESPY’s,” Danica Patrick announced on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.

In 2015, Danica Patrick recieved am ESPY nomination for ‘Best Breakthrough Althlete’. In 2018, her nominations included ‘Best Female Athlete’ and ‘Best Moment’.

“My first ESPYS was 2005, and I have been a fan, coming back every year since,” Patrick said. “It is the biggest night of the year for sports. Every year, I leave feeling so inspired! I am excited to be able to help celebrate, laugh and cry about the past year in sports with everyone. It’s going to be a great night and one full of more than a few surprises.”

Beyond awards, Patrick has a personal connection to the ESPY awards. She met her current boyfriend and Green Bay Packers quarterback, Aaron Rodgers at the show in 2012.

“We met at the ESPYS back in 2012. We remember meeting each other, it was quick,” Patrick said Tuesday on SiriusXM Radio. “I got his email address. … It wasn’t until, obviously, recently that we actually had phone numbers. We referred to each other as Chicago and Green Bay. It was very cute.”

Danica Patrick has already run her final NASCAR race. Her professional stock car racing career came to a close in the 2018 Daytona 500.

This weekend, Danica Patrick is set to run the final leg of her retirement tour. She will enter the 2018 Indy 500. She starts that race from the 7th position.

Before the announcement, rumors began to circulate. It was a wide range of stories as the ESPY’s announcement was kept under wraps. Danica Patrick cleared those rumors up on Instagram, “This is the news!!! Not any of the crazy things you guys thought (or so I read).”
