Danica Patrick out early in her final race – 2018 Indy 500 crash video

Danica Patrick crashes out of the 2018 Indy 500

36-year-old, Danica Patrick ran her final race as a professional racing driver today. Earlier today, she started the 2018 Indianapolis 500 from the 7th position. Right from the green, Patrick was complaining of “understeer” on her race car.

However, 60 some laps later she’s gone out in a crash. Understeer didn’t bite her, the opposite did.

It’s a hot day in Indianapolis, Indiana. It’s also a brand new low downforce package for the Verizon Indycar Series. The combination of those two things are a recipe for a crash.

Lap 68, Danica Patrick went around. She was running by herself when the back end came around at the exit of turn 2.

She looped it and pancaked the outside wall with the left side of the car. The car then bounced off the outside wall and slid backwards across the race track before coming to a rest against the inside wall.

“The first thing I said was, ‘I’m not really sure what happened.’ It just seemed to come around,” Danica Patrick stated to ESPN after exiting the infield care center.

“It seemed pretty late off the corner. They said they looked back at the data and it was a little lift in the middle. It was understeer then back to it and it just swung.”

“Today was really disappointing for what we were hoping for and what you want for your last race. But, I’m grateful for all of it. I wish I could have finished stronger.”

“What really launched [my career] was this [Indy 500]. I’ve had a lot of good fortune here. I still had some this month. It just didn’t come on race day. But, we had some good moments.”

10 laps earlier, Ed Jones did the exact same thing. The low downforce package is throwing a fit for the field. Ed Jones was transported to a local hospital after complaining of a headache. He backed his car into the wall.

Moments before the crash, Danica Patrick was talking with her crew about how her car became more unstable throughout the run. The crash confirmed that statement.

Back in February, Danica Patrick ran her final race as a NASCAR driver. That race at Daytona International Speedway ended in a crash as well.

This was the 8th Indy 500 running for Danica Patrick. Her best Indycar finish at the 2.5-mile speedway came in her debut in the event back in 2005 where she finished 4th.
