Kyle Busch anticipates the restrictor plate package becoming less exciting

Kyle Busch says the All-Star race was more exciting than the Coca-Cola 600; Thinks it will become more single file over time

Kyle Busch said before the All-Star race: “That’s not what I signed up to be a NASCAR driver for. To continue to scrunch the field up and take advantages away from those that are fast.”

Overall, he wasn’t a fan of the package from the beginning. However, he did acknowledge that Charlotte Motor Speedway specifically needs to ‘orchestrate some better racing.’

Kyle Busch went on to finish 9th in the All-Star race. The following week, the sanctioned switched back to the low-downforce package for the Coca-Cola 600, a race Busch dominated.

Following the win, Busch commented on the comparison of the packages.

“Last week’s race would be arguably a bit more entertaining than tonight’s race,” Kyle Busch stated from the Charlotte Motor Speedway media center.

“But, we’re race car drivers. And other teams and the people at Joe Gibbs Racing try to build fast race cars.”

“When the fastest car can win the race, we’re thrilled with that when it’s our car. When it’s not our car we know we gotta go to work and work harder.”

“If the other package is what we come back here with or race anywhere else with [then] trust me our engineers will science it out.”

“And I’d hate to say ‘make it boring’ but, they’d probably make it a bit more single file than what we saw the other night.”

The All-Star package featured a restricted engine with more downforce. Both of those things slowed down the cars dramatically. Though, it also bunched up the pack, which made it appear faster.

The Coca-Cola 600 package was less downforce with an un-restricted engine. It allowed the leader to get away, far more than the test package that was run on the same track a week prior.

“If the package we had last week is going to be the package, we’re all going to go to work and we’re going to figure out how to screw it up.”

“It’s just a fact of the matter. Our engineers are way too smart. They’re going to make cars faster and the faster cars are going to outperform the slower cars.”

“I liked this package [Coca-Cola 600] better because it was more in the drivers hands. Good drivers will show up, good cars will show up. And you’ll have talent that actually comes through.”

“Last week, I felt like I was racing with my 4-ways on. Anybody can do it. You just hold the peddle to the floor and steer it around the race track. It’s not that hard. I think there’s more luck involved in those races than skill.”

“I’d much rather race races that have skill involved.”

Kyle Larson turned the fast time All-Star practice with an average speed of 173.305. Denny Hamlin was quickest in Coca-Cola 600 practice with a speed of 190.134.
