First practice results for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series at Pocono Raceway

There’s only two practice sessions for the MENCS field at Pocono Raceway. Though, this could be the only practice as the weather looks a little shaky for tomorrow.
This session is already slightly delayed. The rain was on track early in the session as that ate up a little bit of time. It’s now green with just 40 minutes in the session.
Denny Hamlin jumps to the top of the board in the first run with a 51.836. He’s fast out of the gate as over 20 cars hit the track all at once.
This is suppose to be qualifying practice. However, most teams are making multi-lap runs early. That decision is a safety net in the case that qualifying and/or the second practice is rained out.
Bubba Wallace made his debut here last year. On his return he stated following the first run, “Oh, I forgot to shift. That’s what I forgot to do.”
“Yeah, we started in race trim. Which is really encouraging, we have really good speed in race trim,” Denny Hamlin stated from the garage area as his team swapped over to qualifying trim with 23 minutes remaining.
20 minutes remain in the first practice at Pocono Raceway. Martin Truex Jr sits at the top of the board with a 51.574. Larson is the top Chevy in 3rd. Menard is top Ford, he’s in 7th.
15 minutes to go, Ross Chastain, Martin Truex Jr and Jimmie Johnson will serve penalties from last weekend. They will sit at the end of pit road. Johnson spent the whole practice in race trim.
10 minutes remain, last year’s winner has jumped to the top of the board. Same driver, different car, same result. Ryan Blaney sits P1.
Kyle Busch reclaims the top spot and he wins first practice at Pocono Raceway.
