Chicagoland Speedway: Results – July 1, 2018 – NASCAR Cup Series

Chicagoland Speedway race results featuring the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series on July 1st, 2018

Today, NASCAR rolls into the Chicago area. The 1.5-mile oval of Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois will host the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. It’s an extreme hot day in the midwest. Teams anticipate 140 degrees inside the race cars.

Paul Menard and Ryan Blaney will lead the field to the green flag. Martin Truex Jr, Ricky Stenhouse Jr, Denny Hamlin and Jimmie Johnson will all start from the tail with inspection issues yesterday. 80 laps in stage 1, 80 laps in stage 2 and 107 laps in stage 3 will complete the Overton’s 400 mile event.

Stage 1

Green flag, Menard gets the launch. Blaney pulls up the hill to side draft him as the approach turn 1.

That side draft pulls Menard back as they head into the banking. Blaney clears him and takes the lead off turn 2. Menard has fallen 5th at the conclusion of the first lap.

Lap 5, Truex is up to 18th!

Lap 18, Clint Bowyer has run down the leader from his 5th place starting position. Bowyer has a run off turn 4. Bowyer is clear heading into turn 1.

Lap 25, Bowyer leads Kurt Busch by 2 seconds. Aric Almirola runs 3rd. Stewart-Haas Racing has locked out the front of the field. Harvick battles for 10th, the lone SHR car outside the top 5.

Lap 36, green flag stops are underway as Martin Truex Jr heads to the pit lane. Lap 38, Kurt Busch hits pit lane from 2nd. Lap 39, Clint Bowyer is on the pit lane.

Penalty! Clint Bowyer was too fast exiting the pit lane. He’ll serve a pass through penalty. Bowyer comes in to serve the pass through, he’s speeding again! He’ll have to serve a stop and go penalty, under green. Bowyer made it a pass through penalty! He’ll have to come back to pit lane again! The second penalty was suppose to be a stop and go. Bowyer returns to the pit lane for the 4th time to complete the stop and go penalty. Bowyer is now 3 laps down.

24 to go in stage 1, Austin Dillon and Ryan Newman have yet to pit. However, Almirola is running an average of 6 mph quicker than Dillon. He now trails by just 4 seconds. 20 to go, Almirola is there, Dillon heads for the pit lane. Almirola cycles to the lead.

10 laps to go in stage 1, Almirola leads Kyle Larson by 4 seconds. Larson is running inches from the wall to maintain his momentum and make the straight-aways slightly longer. Larson is chopping a bit of time out of the lead delta.

Aric Almirola wins stage 1 at Chicagoland Speedway! He put Jimmie Johnson a lap down with 1 lap to go in the stage. 16 cars finished on the lead lap.

Stage 1 Results: 1. Aric Almirola; 2. Kyle Larson; 3. Martin Truex Jr; 4. Kurt Busch; 5. Kevin Harvick; 6. Brad Keselowski; 7. Ryan Blaney; 8. Joey Logano; 9. Chase Elliott; 10. Erik Jones;

Stage 2

The field hits the pit lane. Almirola leads them to the pit exit, Harvick is off 2nd. It was a slow stop in the box for Larson. Martin Truex Jr had to wait for the jack to drop on Blaney before he could leave his box, he was boxed in.

“It’s really slick,” Almirola radio.

Green, Almirola leads on the inside. Harvick doesn’t get going at all on the outside lane. Keselowski runs into the back of him to help him get going, Harvick jumps sideways but he hangs onto it.

Almirola leads off turn 2. But, Harvick made up all the ground he lost on the start. He pulls to the rear bumper of Almirola. Harvick is looking for the lead in turn 3, Almirola holds him off.

Lap 94, Larson is buried in the field. He had to cycle the ECU during his pit stop. That was the cause of the slow stop. Larson is charging through the field quickly.

Lap 116, Harvick has run down Almirola once more as the leader fights lap traffic. Whatever lane Almirola picks, Harvick goes elsewhere. As Almirola clears the lap cars, he begins to pull away. When he catches lap cars, Harvick closes.

Lap 121, Larson heads to the pit box as green flag stops have begun. Harvick is in on lap 122. Lap 123, Almirola pits from the lead. Harvick is around Almirola. He rounds turns 1-2 as Almirola is on the apron and getting up to speed.

The yellow flag is out for debris! Clint Bowyer was the lone car on the race track. He’ll get back one of his laps, he’s now on the lead lap. The race leaders head back to the pit road. Blaney leads them off the pit lane with a two tire call. Ryan Newman stayed on the race track.

Green, Ryan Blaney leads into turn 1. Almirola and Kurt Busch split Newman for 2nd. Almirola is running down Blaney in a hurry. Lap 135, Almirola pulls right to the bumper of Blaney through turns 3-4. Blaney skates up the race track off the corner. Almirola drives under him off turn 4, new leader.

20 to go in stage 2, Almirola leads Kurt Busch by 1.5 seconds. However, there’s trouble for the race leader, he has a loose wheel. Almirola heads to the pit lane under green. He turned his fastest lap of the race the lap before the pit stop.

9 to go in stage 2, Kevin Harvick is all over Kurt Busch for the stage win. Harvick has a run off turn 4, Busch closes the door and blocks the inside lane. The battle is short lived as Busch pulls away.

2 to go, Harvick has caught Busch once more. 1 to go, Harvick runs high in turn 1, Busch to the bottom. They comes off turn 2 nose to tail. Harvick runs the middle in turn 3! He gets to his right rear. Kurt Busch runs him inches from the wall! They make light contact and Harvick scrapes the wall. Harvick beats him to the line!

“Really! That’s my teammate right there everybody,” Kurt Busch yells over the radio.

Stage 2 Results: 1. Kevin Harvick; 2. Kurt Busch; 3. Kyle Larson; 4. Martin Truex Jr; 5. Ryan Blaney; 6. Brad Keselowski; 7. Chase Elliott; 8. Clint Bowyer; 9. Denny Hamlin; 10. Joey Logano;

Stage 3

The field hits the pit lane. Harvick is first in and first off. Kurt Busch will start alongside. Almirola got the lucky dog.

Green, Truex is all over the back bumper of Busch at the line. Busch gets a shove into turn 1. Larson pulls to the right rear of Harvick and takes over 2nd on the outside. Harvick falls to 4th off turn 2.

Lap 170, Larson has run down Kurt Busch. Larson has a run off turn 4, he cuts the tri-oval and takes the lead into turn 1. Busch pulls right to his bumper and Truex now has a run on Busch. Truex drives deep into the corner, he can’t hold it on the bottom. Truex wiggles and Busch drives back under him. Lap 173, Harvick and Truex are both under Busch at the start finish line.

Lap 174, Harvick has run down Kyle Larson. Harvick has a look to the outside, he can’t complete the pass. Harvick cuts to the bottom in turn 3. Larson goes all the way to the wall. Larson has a ton of speed off turn 4, he can’t take the position back in turn 1.

The caution is out as Denny Hamlin has spun down the back-straight. Hamlin lost it while running the top off turn 2.

The field hits the pit lane. Two tires for Joey Logano, he leads them off the pit lane. Harvick is off in 2nd. Several cars stay out including Keselowski and Almirola.

Green, Logano beats on the bumper of Almirola at the start. Logano cuts to the bottom and makes it a 3 wide race for the lead into turn 1. Keselowski leads off turn 2. Almirola has fallen through the field. They fan out 4 wide around him into turn 3.

Lap 186, Harvick has run down Keselowski. The #2 slides off the corner. Harvick drives to the outside off turn 2. Weather is on the way.

Lap 200, Kyle Busch has climbed to 2nd. They’ve been working on that car all day. Harvick leads by 2.3 seconds. Clint Bowyer is up to 11th.

60 to go, Corey Lajoie is in the wall, the caution is out. Rain clouds are in the distance. 4 tires for all. Kyle Busch beats Harvick off the pit lane!

Green, Kyle Busch leads by a half car length at the flag stand. Truex gets to the outside of Harvick into turn 1. Harvick holds him off in turn 3. Kyle Busch leads by 5 car lengths.

47 to go, Almirola is back on the pit lane. The driver was complaining of a loose wheel.

39 to go, Harvick has run down Kyle Busch. Harvick has changed his line. Kyle Busch takes it to the top. Harvick goes back to the bottom. They swap lanes again. Busch now leads by 10 car lengths. Busch navigates lap traffic.

23 to go, Kyle Larson runs 3rd. He’s 2.4 seconds back of the leader. He’s the fastest car on the race track, running inches from the wall. 20 to go, Larson has a run on Harvick off turn 2, Harvick leaves the lane open. Larson drives to 2nd down the back-stretch and sets the radar for Kyle Busch. Larson trails by 1.5 seconds.

18 laps to go, Kyle Busch has adjusted his line. Busch and Larson both run inches from the wall. 15 to go, Busch leads by .8 seconds. Larson is a tenth quicker per lap but he’ll need to adjust his line as he catches the leader.

10 to go, Busch leads by 10 car lengths. Larson continues to run the opposite line of Kyle Busch. 8 to go, Larson tags the wall off turn 4! The gap is now 1.2 seconds. It was light contact but he’s lost a ton of time.

5 to go, Kyle Busch fights lap traffic, it’s Ryan Newman and a pack of other cars.

2 to go, Busch runs 4 wide with lap cars! Larson closes! The gap is down to .5 seconds.

1 to go, Busch leads by 3 car lengths. Larson looks to the inside in turn 1, it’s a slide job! He’s not clear, they touch off turn 2! Both cars are int he wall. Larson leads into turn 3. Kyle Busch gets back to his bumper into turn 3! Larson is sideways as Busch tags the wall once again!

Larson spins to the infield. Kyle Busch drives by on the outside and takes the win at Chicagoland Speedway! What a race!

“If you don’t like that kind of racing… Don’t even watch,” Kyle Busch responds to the booing crowd.

“I ran into him first,” Kyle Larson stated to NBC.
