Gregg Satterlee picked up the win at Muskingum County Speedway

Gregg Satterlee hopes this win is the turning point in his season after struggling for the first half of the year

Where’s the tire guy? Not in victory lane.

Gregg Satterlee won in dominating fashion at Muskingum County Speedway. This is a huge win for this team.

Satterlee qualified 5th in group B. He then drove through the field in his heat race. The #22 went to the outside of Bobby Pierce and Jonathan Davenport. Three wide and he took the lead off turn 2 in his heat race. Satterlee then went on to win the heat which placed him outside front row for the feature.

From there, it was an ass whopping for 17 straight minutes as Satterlee led every lap at Muskingum County Speedway and took the $12,000 check. It was also his first LOLMDS win in 2018.

“It was awesome,” Gregg Satterlee said after the race.

“We had a really good car. Here earlier, in the first past of the season we’ve kinda been struggling. We’ve been getting better. The last couple of nights we’ve had a really good car.”

“Saturday night, we ripped the nose off. Had the potential to run top 5. Sunday, I got a flat with a good potential to run in the top 5. Tonight, we were even a little bit better than what we had been. We were able to qualify decent, get the heat win and start up front which is huge. We’ve not been able to start in the first 4-5 rows in any of these races.”

“Finishing in the top 10 when you don’t start up there, is extremely difficult. We were able to start up front tonight. The car was just awesome, balanced perfect.”

“We hardly made any adjustments all night. I guess some nights you unload and you just gotta be smart and know that you have a good car. Make good decisions. I guess that’s what we did tonight.”

Did you tweak the setup before you unloaded? Like, did you throw something at it?

“Nope. Still about the same thing we’ve been working with. We tweaked it just a hair for the feature. But, very minimal. Well take good notes and try to figure out where we’re at with everything.”

“Hopefully, we can move forward with this and be competitive for the rest of the season. Because we haven’t been the first half. It’s frustrating. There’s a lot of time and effort into this. When you don’t get good results it can really be a bummer.”

You ran out to a 15 or more car length lead at one point ion the feature. Then, you got behind lap traffic. They were side by side in front of you. The second place car ran you down to maybe just 5 car lengths or less. Was that you slowing down or was that just the effects of clean air?

“Anytime you get behind cars, you’re going to go slower. My crew guy [Drew Walters] was giving me good signals. I knew I had a comfortable lead. If I had to press the issue, I was going to.”

“But, I didn’t want to go in there and trash myself. You know, hit them and bend a quarter panel into my tire. I had to just make good corners and lap the cars when I knew I could get by them.”

“If you try to slide them or show them you’re there. You kinda gotta be almost conservative.”

You don’t want to throw your race away over a position that you’re not racing for.

“Yeah. And I was trying to be smart about that. Not overdrive my car and not overwork my tires.”

“It just worked out. I think sometimes you just have a lucky night. Everything falls your way. As long as you drive it sensibly, you’re good.”

Victory lane

Where’s the tire guy? Not in victory lane. Did he get lost?

Drew Walters [no relation] is the avid tire guy for Gregg Satterlee. His work mode switch is busted. As the #22 driver and crew posed for photos in victory lane, Satterlee had his head head on a swivel. He was in search of his absent tire guy.

It was his first win as a full-time crew member. Instead of posing in front of the cameras, Drew went back to the hauler to do some more work.

What do you think is up your tire guy not going to victory lane?

“He said he came back to get tire stuff for the tech. Hopefully, if we do this next time, he comes down. I kinda felt bad. I mean, he works really hard and does a really good job.”

“We’ll have time to celebrate. I wish he would have been out there to get our picture.”

“But, we have off tomorrow. We’ll celebrate.”

Drew Walters isn’t completely without a memento. After the car passed tech, he was working on un-mounting and loading tires. Drew walked behind the car, grabbed two pieces of confetti and stuffed them in his wallet.

Do you guys go to Pennsylvania from here? Or what’s the plan?

“No. We’re heading straight down to North Carolina.”

That Fayetteville race isn’t for a few days. What do you do in the meantime? Do you just park at a rest area and kill time?

“We’re gonna go to our engine builders shop. We gotta get an engine to him and we’ve got work to do. We don’t have a whole lot of work to do because the car’s not beat up.”

“The work never ends. We’ll have a few beers and enjoy the moment then get ready for the next race.”
