Kyle Busch has a trophy case problem; Discusses Coy Gibbs leading JGR

Kyle Busch talks trophy management; Before he was signed to JGR, Coy Gibbs once got Kyle Busch kicked out of Truck Series weekend

Coy Gibbs on a phone call to Joe Gibbs: “There’s a kid here that showed up and he’s three tenths faster than the field.”

Kyle Busch tweeted after the Pocono sweep: “Got us a couple new trophies to bring home!”

33-year-old, Kyle Busch now had 49 NASCAR Cup Series wins. That ties him 13th on the all-time NASCAR wins list with Tony Stewart. He’s also the 2015 series champion.

Beyond cup, Busch has the most all-time NASCAR Xfinity Series wins at 92. He’s the 2009 Xfinity Series champion. He’s also tied with the most all time wins in the NASCAR Truck Series at 51.

That’s 192 race wins alone in the top-three divisions of the NASCAR ladder system. That’s 192 trophies that need to be stored.

“I build trophy cases to house trophies. Then I get more and I don’t have anymore room. I do have a trophy case problem,” Kyle Busch said from the media center at Pocono Raceway.

“I asked from bonuses in my contract so that I can make new trophy cases,” Busch comments as team owner Joe Gibbs lets out a laugh in the background.

“I’m behind right now. There’s a lot of them that are in people’s rooms at KBM, or offices. They’re on the floor and they’re on desktops.”

“My assistant girl, she keeps track of where everything’s at. We got a whole list running right now. It’s pretty good.”

Team owner Joe Gibbs was sitting alongside Busch during this press conference. He laughed when he heard the idea of a bonus. When Kyle Busch finished, Joe Gibbs grabbed the mic.

“I’m gonna tell you the truth… I work for him,” coach Joe Gibbs chimes in on the topic of a potential bonus for Kyle Busch.

JGR executive JD Gibbs is currently getting treatment for brain malfunction issues. This stemmed from head injuries received earlier in life.

JD Gibbs was signed as the president of the company in 1997. However, as he spends less time at the race track, Coy Gibbs has stepped into the picture to fill the void.

“With JD’s situation right now, I just wanted to say Coy [Gibbs} has taken that role. He also oversees our motocross. But, he came over to our side. It’s a total team and total family. I appreciate those guys so much,” Joe Gibbs explains.

“When you have a day like today you realize how fortunate you are to have them. Many of them have been there 20-25 years.”

Kyle Busch: “It’s a good thing I befriended Coy when I was 16. He’s got my back.”

Joe Gibbs: “Actually, I gotta tell this story. Coy was running trucks at the time. [They were at] California. So, I called him. He says, ‘I’m doing pretty good. But, there’s a kid here that showed up and he’s three tenths faster than the field.’ ”

“He says, ‘But, he’s only 16. I hope they kick him out.’ And they did,” Gibbs finishes the story with a huge laugh.

Kyle Busch on the other hand doesn’t think it’s too funny.

“Yeah. That happened,” Kyle Busch says with a numb tone. “Good story Joe. Thanks! Way to break it up.”
