100,000 people will be at the track in Watkins Glen, New York this weekend. This is the final round of practice ahead of tonight’s qualifying session.
It’s another hour and fifteen minute session for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series.
1 hour remains, Spencer Gallagher runs wide in the bus stop. This will be his first MENCS start.
William Byron and Jimmie Johnson sit at the top of the board. 20 minutes in, Denny Hamlin knocks them both off the top. Hamlin turned a 70.920.
Clint Bowyer returns to the garage after a run. There’s a small fire on the rear end. The crew changed gears before this session. Something broke and caused a leak.
35 minutes remain, the red flag is out on the track. Debris in the bus stop.
Joey Logano loses 1.5 seconds over a 15 lap run. Kyle Busch’s 15th lap is quicker than his first lap.
Aric Almirola is turning triple-duty at Watkins Glen. He ran the K&N race, he’s running the Xfinity race later today and the Cup race tomorrow. With 20 minutes to go in final practice, Almirola jumps to 2nd in the times sheet.
As the session runs down, less and less cars are improving their times. Much like the early morning practice, cars are sliding as the session continues.
Minutes remain, Chase Elliott sneaks up and steals the top spot. Elliott wins MENCS final practice at Watkins Glen International!
Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series qualifying will get underway later today following the NXS event.
