Bill Elliott explains his return to NASCAR

Bill Elliott is set to run a one-off NASCAR Xfinity Series event at Road America in a car that already has a win in 2018

Bill Elliott: “I just want to see what this stuff’s like.”

Bill Elliott is the 1988 Winston Cup Champion. He claimed 44 wins in the NASCAR Cup Series.

Elliott will return to the NASCAR Xfinity Series. He’s scheduled to run at Road America will run on August 25th. It’s his first Xfinity Series start since 2005. He attempted to qualify for an event at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2007.

Elliott has been running some retro NASCAR events across the country in recent months. He was just getting rev’d up.

Now, he’s back.

“I’ve been through so many evolutions of racing. I just want to see what this stuff’s like,” Bill Elliott stated to Claire B Lang on Sirius XM NASCAR Radio shortly after the announcement.

“I watched the Xfinity race today. Man, them guys are good. They are really really good.”

“I would just like to say, ‘How are these cars today? How are things going along?’ Just kinda see what it’s all about.”

“That’s more my interest than anything. Mike Beam asked me to do it. We talked about it a little bit. I said, ‘Mike, have you totally lost your mind?’ ”

“Lord help us if it rains that weekend. I’ve run in the rain a little bit but not much.”

The NASCAR Xfinity Series race on Saturday at Watkins Glen International saw a brief stint in the rain. It was the fifth time NASCAR has ever run in the rain in one of the top three national series.

Elliott hasn’t run a NASCAR Busch Series race since 2005, he finished 19th. He attempted to start a Busch race at Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2007 but he failed to qualify for the event.

GMS Racing has fielded machines on the NASCAR ladder since 2013. In 2016, they picked up the NASCAR Truck Series championship with Johnny Sauter behind the wheel.

The team now fields a NASCAR Xfinity Series car which has featured multiple drivers in 2018. In addition, they field multiple NASCAR truck Series machines with Cody Coughlin, Johnny Sauter and Justin Haley behind the wheel.

Since Elliott’s last start in 2007, the name of the series has changed multiple times over. Now, he’s returning with a solid team. A team that has a win in 2018. It was the first win in the 68 race history of the Xfinity team.

GMS Racing is in their second year as a full-time NASCAR Xfinity Series organization. Spencer Gallagher picked up a win for them earlier in the year. Days later, the win was stripped away following a urinalysis test.

The bankrupt BK Racing will go to the highest approved bidder in the coming weeks. GMS is also rumored to be placing a a bid for that NASCAR Cup Series operation.

Bill Elliott will drive the #23 for GMS Racing at Road America August 25th. Elliott will also run a TransAm car at Mid-Ohio August 9-11.
