Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch lead them to the green. 20 laps in stage 1, 20 more in stage 2 and 50 laps in stage 3 complete the 90 lap race.

Stage 1
Watkins Glen International

Laps: 20

Green flag, Denny Hamlin leads on the inside into turn 1. Kyle Busch runs side by side with Chase Elliott for 2nd.

Hamlin slips off turn 1, Elliott looks to the inside! Hamlin is late on the brakes and noses ahead into turn 1. Kyle Busch works by Elliott into the bus stop.

Kyle Busch looks for the to the inside back at the flagstand. Hamlin pulls down to block the inside, he leaves room on the outside for Busch. Hamlin’s entry is pinched. Kyle Busch gets a run off turn 1. Busch looks to the inside in turn 2. Busch gets loose and Hamlin retakes the lead on the outside of turn 2.

Busch has another run into the bus stop. He looks to the inside. Hamlin hangs to his outside. They run side by side through the entire bus stop. Hamlin gets loose on the inside into turn 5 and stakes up the field. Logano and others get nose damage. Busch takes the lead.

Joey Logano is in the sand in turn 6. The car wouldn’t turn after the field stacked up in turn 5. Logano heads to the garage.

Lap 3, Blaney runs to the inside of Almirola in turn 7. Almirola comes down and Almirola is around. He backs it into the wall, heavy damage. The caution is out.

Green, Kyle Busch leads Martin Truex Jr into turn 1. Truex fights off Elliott to hold 2nd.

3 to go in stage 1, pit road is busy. 2 to go, Kyle Busch heads to pit road. Martin Truex Jr remains on the track.

Martin Truex Jr wins stage 1 at Watkins Glen International!

Stage 2

Laps: 20

The rest of the field hits the pit lane. Truex is first in and first off. Kyle Busch and Hamlin will lead them to the restart.

Green flag on stage 2, Kyle Busch is clear by a clear length into turn 1. Elliott looks to the inside of Hamlin for 2nd. Elliott gets a massive drive off the bottom and pulls to the bumper of Busch heading into turn 2.

Elliott runs wide off turn 6. He looks to the inside for the lead in turn 7. Kyle Busch leaves him room but holds him off.

Lap 27, Kyle Busch is loose through the bus stop. Elliott pulls to his rear bumper in turn 5. Elliott rides all over his bumper but he lifts after light contact.

Kyle Busch misses the entry to turn 6, Busch runs wide off turn 6. Elliott has a run into turn 7. Elliott dives to the inside, he takes the lead down the front stretch in front of the grandstand as the crowd erupts.

3 to go, Clint Bowyer and Kurt Busch hit the pit lane. They will need to stop again before the race ends.

Chase Elliott wins stage 2 at Watkins Glen International by 2 full seconds!

Laps: 50

Ryan Blaney pits from 9th. The top 8 stay out on the race track. Everyone else is on a 2 stop strategy.

Green flag on stage 3, Chase Elliott leads by a car length into turn 1. Elliott runs wide on the exit, he gets loose over the crubs and the rear end steps out. Kyle Busch has a run, he dives to the inside in turn 2. Kyle Busch retakes the lead.

Lap 47, Ryan Newman is around in turn 6. He grabs a gear and continues.

At the front of the field, Chase Elliott is all over the rear bumper of Kyle Busch into turn 5. Elliott has a run off turn 6. Elliott looks to the inside in turn 7. Busch leaves him room but the #18 holds him off.

38 to go, Kyle Busch leads Chase Elliott by 1.6 seconds. Elliott has purposefully backed off to save fuel. Matt DiBenedetto has brown up in the bus stop. The caution is out.

Kyle Busch leads them to pit lane. Kyle Busch is first in and first off. Keselowski hits the jack man for Denny Hamlin. The hose snaps in half and the other hose gets dragged by Hamlin then whipped into a separate tire carrier. Another crew member for Chase Elliott jumps and slides over the nose of the #9 as he leaves the box.

Trouble for Kyle Busch! The fuel can didn’t work. They only got a few gallons. Kyle Busch returns to pit road. Busch restarts 24th.

Green, Chase Elliott leads Austin Dillon into turn 1. Kurt Busch looks low on Dillon and Truex looks to the middle, 3 wide for 2nd. Kurt Busch moves to 2nd.

32 to go, Martin Truex Jr looks to the inside of Kurt Busch into turn 6. He’s up to 2nd. Truex trails Elliott by 1.5 seconds.

29 to go, Kyle Busch is slicing through the field. He restarted in 24th, he’s up to 16th.

23 to go, Matt Kenseth is off track in the bus stop. Denny Hamlin moves to his outside and Kenseth ran out of room on the exit.

20 to go, Kyle Busch has cracked the top 10. He just moved around Harvick and took over 9th.

15 to go, Martin Truex Jr is running down Chase Elliott.

12 to go, Ross Chastain has a flat tire just ahead of the leaders. He pulls off the track, no caution. Jimmie Johnson is in the wall off turn 7. AJ Allmendinger dove to the inside, Johnson tried to shut the door and he went around. The #48 lost his mirror early in the race. Johnson heads for the pit lane, no caution.

8 to go, Elliott leads Truex by .4 seconds. They run 15 seconds ahead of Erik Jones in 3rd. 4th is Suarez and Busch is up to 5th.

3 to go, Truex closes the gap to a car length heading into turn 1. Elliott ads a car length up the hill. He adds another through the bus stop.

2 to go, back to a car length out of turn 1. Truex slides through the entry to the bus stop. He has to correct on the exit. Elliott leads by 6 car lengths into turn 5.

Last lap, Chase Elliott runs wide in turn 1! Truex is all over his bumper! Elliott opes it back up. Truex runs wide in turn 5. Truex is out of fuel!

It took 99 starts. Chase Elliott wins his first NASCAR Cup Series race! It’s the 250th win for Hendrick Motorsports!
