Today, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series has two rounds of practice on the schedule. The first one is a very early morning session.

“This is my least favorite practice of the year. It’s way too early in the morning,” Austin Dillon tells NBC ahead of practice.
The practice was scheduled for 8:35AM. However, there’s a heavy fog sitting over the track in Michigan. NASCAR will not allow anyone on the track until officials can see the entire racing surface.
Kyle Busch, Daniel Suarez and Ryan Newman are serving a penalty from Watkins Glen International. Those drivers didn’t stop when they went through the bus stop.
That’s a 15 minute penalty. However, if this practice is delayed too much longer and it won’t be 15 minutes long. Thus, they would have to serve the penalty in practice three. The practice later today is far more important.
9:15 the track is open. The start of practice was delayed by 40 minutes. It’s going to be a very short 15 minute session. It can’t be extended any longer due to truck practice that will follow.
Denny Hamlin has swept the weekend so far. He was fastest in the opening round of practice on Friday. He returned later that day to win every round of knockout qualifying and set the pole.
He’s not going to win this brief practice at Michigan International Speedway. Erik Jones sits at the top of the board as practice comes to an end.
