NASCAR has a massive hit with The Charlotte Roval
On Sunday, NASCAR dropped the green on The Roval. The seventeen turn road course spanned 2.28-miles. It used a brand new infield section in addition to the traditional oval circuit.

The Roval race earned a 2.0 rating. In total, the race brought 3.218 million viewers to the program that was shown on NBC.
The Roval brought a 10% increase in ratings over the Charlotte, NC race in 2017. It’s the first natural increase in viewers for any race in the 2018 season that wasn’t a result of a network change.
There was hype leading into the race. That hype brought the fans to their tiny computers and the race delivered with a crash in the final corner that took out both the front runner.
These numbers are significantly higher than the third race weekend at Charlotte in the previous season. In 2017, the race at Charlotte Motor Speedway earned a 1.8 rating with 2.9 million viewers.
However, the race was not run on the same date. Last year, the Bank of America 500 was run on the 1.5-mile oval. It was also the first race in the Round of 12 elimination on October 8th. The Roval was a cutoff race in the Round of 16.
In 2017, Dover International Speedway closed out the Round of 16, instead of the Roval. The Dover event in 2017 scored a 1.3 rating and just 2 million viewers.
