NASCAR Playoff contender Justin Allgaier returns to the dirt track

Justin Allgaier on tonight’s main event at The Dirt Track: “I obviously want to win the race. That’s why you go to the race track.”

JR Motorsports driver Justin Allgaier is in the middle of a NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoff run. This weekend, the NXS has an off week. Martinsville Speedway is hosting the MENCS and the NCWTS races. The pits at the Virginia track aren;t big enough to host all three NASCAR National Series.

So what does a NASCAR driver do with an off week in the middle of a high pressure championship run? For Justin Allgaier, he heads down the road to the local dirt track.

The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway is hosting the World Short Track Championship this weekend. The 0.4-mile clay oval welcomes multiple divisions of the DIRTcar Racing ladder.

“The dirt racing side of things is where I grew up,” Justin Allgaier stated from The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway. “I still love to get back and get some racing in.”

“The Xfinity side, there’s a lot going on with the Playoffs. It stays pretty stressful,” Allgaier continued.

Justin Allgaier has advanced in to the Round of 8. There’s two races left in this round before the series heads to the championship round at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Allgaier is positioned 6th after a single race in this round. He sits 5 points under the cut line.

“Not that I don’t put a lot of stress on myself to come here and run good in my dirt car. But, it is not to separate yourself and come have fun.”

“These guys and all the guys that I raced with for a number of years back at home in Illinois. They all do a lot of dirt racing themselves.”

“Charlotte Motor Speedway is so much fun anyways. To be close to home here and do some dirt racing, It’s a good time.”

Justin Allgaier on goals for the Dirt Track at Charlotte event

It’s not really stepping down. There are 52 DIRTcar Modifieds on hand to compete for a position in Sunday’s 30-lap main event.

“It’s very reminiscent of going to Volusia in February. That’s cool, having the World Short Track Championships here and having something a little bit different. The DIRTcar Nationals in Florida is really the only time I get to run. To have another race that I’m able to do on a NASCAR off weekend in the Xfinity Series, is great.”

“We were 5th in practice the other night. That was a good thing. We were at least relevant as far as speeds go.”

Allgaier qualified 10th in group A qualifying on Saturday. The field was divided into three separate qualifying groups. Allgaier then climbed to finish 2nd in his heat race. That will put him in the main event.

The event will conclude tonight. The race winner in the DIRTcar UMP Modifieid division will be handed a check for $4,000. Last place will pay $400.

“I obviously want to win the race. That’s why you go to the race track. We the field of cars that are here, if we can just have a good solid weekend and have some fun with it, I think it’s going to be a success,” Allgaier concluded.
