With two races remaining in the 2018 NASCAR season, Logano says he’s the favorite
Joey Logano will start 9th today at ISM Raceway. But, he could start last and finish last, it doesn’t matter.
Joey Logano is going to the Championship race at Homestead-Miami Speedway regardless of what he finishes today. He picked up a win two weeks ago at Martinsville Speedway. Harvick failed post-race inspection after his win last week. That leaves Logano as the only driver locked into the Championship 4 next weekend.
Logano has twelve top-5 finishes in 2018. Seven of those have come in just the last eleven races. There’s no doubt he’s on a hot streak. And his timing for a streak of solid finishes couldn’t be more perfect.
“Honestly, it’s funny. … I was talking with Todd [Gordon, #22 crew chief] on the way out here, and I told him, ‘When the playoffs started I kind of felt like we were an underdog of making it,’ ” Logano stated to a group of reporters during a Team Penske event in Phoenix on Thursday night.
“And honestly, the last six or seven weeks we’ve led a lot more laps, we’ve won a lot of stages, won a race, was fast at Kansas, was fast at Texas, you know what, I think we’re the favorite now to win,” Logano concluded.
Competitors react to Logano’s comment
Martin Truex Jr: “Um, I really don’t care. It’s good for the sport. It’s good for our fans to see things and get them fired up,” Martin Truex responded to that statement from the ISM Raceway media center.
“For me personally, I know what I have to do. I don’t need to tell anyone.”
“Talks is cheap. You know, put it on the race track and show us what you got. That’s all that matters. That’s kinda what I focus on and that’s what I plan on doing if I get there,” Truex concluded.
Chase Elliott: “I mean, I don’t really care what he thinks,” Chase Elliott commented.
Kevin Harvick: “I’m just worried about Phoenix,” Harvick said after claiming the pole at ISM Raceway.
Kurt Busch: “Logano, I think has performed the best, on average with points. We’ve performed the same as the big 3 but we haven’t gained on them. You gotta do it with a win,” Kurt Busch said of Logano.
Kyle Busch: “Sure, he’s the only one locked in to go to Homestead. So, he’s the only guy racing right now. So, he can be the favorite if he wants to,” Kyle Busch said.
