Erik Jones talks the Gateway Dirt Nationals

NASCAR Cup Series driver Erik Jones was in St. Louis to watch the indoor dirt race as a race fan

Last week, the Gateway Dirt Nationals rolled into downtown, St. Louis, Missouri. The indoor race brought the crowds along with it as it set record pre-sale ticket numbers.

On the floor inside The Dome at America’s Center a 1/5-mile dirt track was constructed. The temporary bullring circuit was ready for dirt late model, dirt modified and dirt midget weekend.

New for 2018 was the dirt midget class. NASCAR drivers Christopher Bell, Kyle Larson, Ricky Stenhouse Jr and Chase Briscoe all had open wheel midget rides for the race.

Another NASCAR driver, Erik Jones was on hand for the 2018 Gateway Dirt Nationals. He was hanging out at the Keith Kunz Motorsports hauler without the drivers suit. He was there as a fan, to catch some indoor dirt track racing.

Erik Jones talks the indoor dirt race

Is this your first time coming to the Gateway Dirt Nationals?

“Yeah, this is my first time coming out here. I’ve watched the broadcast for the last couple years but I never got to see it in person,” Erik Jones told RacingNews.co from the convention center inside The Dome at America’s Center.

What’s your impression of it so far?

“It’s pretty neat. It’s been fun. I got here last night [On Friday], the midget races were good and the bigger car races, modified and late model were good as well.”

“The late model show has always been really good here.”

Are you thinking about jumping in a car in the future?

“No, not really.”

Really? It’s just not your style? The bullring thing.

“I’d give it a shot. Someday in the right situation. It’s just really foreign to me. I don’t know much about it. I don’t know much about these cars.”

“It would definitely take a little bit of seat time before I could come and do something like this and feel like I could be competitive. But, maybe one day,” Erik Jones concluded.
