Logan Seavey details riding the fence for crash avoidance (Videos)

Logan Seavey rode the fence like a skateboard from behind the wheel of his USAC National Midget

Logan Seavey: “Next thing I know, I was looking at the sky.”

Logan Seavey started on the front row at Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway for the USAC National midget event. The Newmanstown, PA track is also known as Lanco Speedway and features a bullring 1/5-mile layout.

They dropped the green and Seavey slotted into 2nd. Spencer Bayston, his teammate came with a late race charge to take the position and move Seavey back to 3rd with just a few laps to go.

“I was ok. I wasn’t great,” Seavey said of his car that night.

Spencer Bayston pulled away from Seavey and found himself at the front of the field and in a race for the lead. Seavey had held on to 3rd at this point with less than a handful of laps remaining.

“I wasn’t good enough that night, to win. I was kinda just riding in 3rd.”

“It’s a really tight track. It’s tough to maneuver lap traffic. Everybody was right on the wall.”

In running that line, a big curb had built up against the fence. The cushion provided a halfpipe like skate ramp for high horsepower midget machines.

Bayston tangled with lapped traffic and found himself parked at the high side of the race track. While he sat on the racing groove, 3rd place and the rest of the field was coming. Seavey was the first one there.

You gotta be on your toes at all times when you’re racing. You can never accept crashing. So, I wasn’t ready to crash and wasn’t going to crash.

Seavey uses the fence to avoid the crash

“Yeah, I don’t even know how to explain that one. Just kind of a once in a lifetime deal,” Logan Seavey stated to RacingNews.co .

“It just so happened that we were at the right track, where it was possible. I kinda got put in a bad situation where it was either that or crash.”

“I kinda got up on the wall a little bit earlier in the race avoiding a crash. This time, I had to go up a little bit higher. I just had a really bad angle at the car there.”

“I had to gas it up really hard to try not to stall my motor. That was the biggest thing I was worried about.”

“Next thing I know, I was looking at the sky. I thought for sure that I wasn’t going to come down on my wheels. A second later, I’m rolling down the front stretch.”

“We bent the front end a little bit. But, nothing too bad. Another crazy deal and it will probably never happen again. A weird freak deal.”

Was it planned to ride the wall?

I know you only had a couple split seconds to figure out where you were going to go. But, was it planned to go up on the fence like that and hope for the best?

“I didn’t quite think I was going to go that high. Thought maybe just the right sides were going to get up on it and I would drive around him.”

“I was at a really bad angle and the motor was starting to die. So, I just had to go full throttle and hope for the best. Anything was going to be better than t-boning a parked car.”

“Even if I would have tipped over, I don’t think it would have hurt the car much. Luckily, I came down on all four wheels.”

“I don’t know if planned is the right word. I just saw it as my best case scenario. Somehow, it all worked out. Physics worked out for me.”

Seavey restarted 2nd after that with a slightly bent front end. He ended up getting passed for 2nd on the last lap and finished in 3rd.
