Dale Earnhardt Jr tells the other half of the number 8 story

Originally, NASCAR wasn’t going to allow Dale Earnhardt Jr to run the number 8 for just one race

Dale Earnhardt Jr: “The number eight is coming back!”

For 2019, JR Motorsports has moved a few numbers around. In addition, they’ve picked up the number 8. The seat will be shared with confirmed drivers of Zane Smith, Jeb Burton, Ryan Truex, Spencer Gallagher and Ryan Preece.

So, how did he make that happen?

“I wanted to tell everybody a little bit about how that came about. I wanted to run that number in a single event next year.”

What event would that be?

“A throwback event at Darlington. We were going to swap numbers with BJ McLeod Motorsports for that event.”

That lets us know that Dale Earnhardt Jr has plans to return to the NASCAR Xfinity Series in 2019. Last year, he ran a single event at Richmond Raceway, he finished 4th.

However, there are rules written in the NASCAR rule book to prevent teams from using a one-off number that’s registered by another team. They don’t want teams changing numbers on a week to week basis.

“NASCAR won’t allow us to swap for just one race.”

“So, we talked to BJ and asked him if he’d be willing to give us the number for the whole season. He was nice enough to do it. So, thank you to BJ McLeod Motorsports. And that’s the rest of the story.”
