Johnny Sauter was ‘kinda trying to wreck’ Kyle Busch in the Atlanta truck race

Instead, Kyle Busch set the record for all-time wins in the NASCAR Truck Series

Johnny Sauter and Kyle Busch battled at the front of the pack last night at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Kyle Busch went on to take the win, setting the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series win record at 52.

Busch fought a loose wheel early in the race. He drove from the tail of the field and back to the front in now time.

For Busch, it was like the competition was parked. However, a select few gave him a challenge, like his teammate Harrison Burton and ThorSport’s Johnny Sauter.

Johnny Sauter comments on the race with Kyle Busch

“Honestly, I was kinda trying to wreck him and I just couldn’t get there,” said 2nd place finisher Johnny Sauter.

“I was locked onto him and I was hoping he would spin out, but he did a great job of blocking.”

“So, in hindsight, maybe (I’d) go to the top, but I just don’t feel like I would have had the momentum to get him off the corner. I might think differently after I watch the replay.”

ThorSport Racing

Johnny Sauter announced late in the off-season that he would be making the move from GMS Racing to ThorSport Racing in 2019. His deal didn’t come together until February 13. Last night, 3 of their trucks finished inside the top-5.

“It’s great, obviously I’m a late addition to the party,” said Sauter.

“Those guys have had a lot of speed toward the end of last year, I felt like. So, when the opportunity came back and (owner) Duke (Thorson) gave me the ring to come back, I was like, ‘Hell, yeah, let’s do it.’ … I feel like we’ll be able to carry this for a while.”
