Brad Keselowski’s crew member has been ejected from ISM Raceway

Decreased tolerances regarding NASCAR inspection have resulted in a member of the Team Penske road crew being sent home

Brad Keselowski failed pre-qualifying inspection twice at ISM Raceway on Friday afternoon.

Brandon “Shaggy” Pope and engineer for the team has been ejected as a penalty for the second failure. He is a member of the 12 person road crew for the Team Penske #2 machine.

Pope has been ejected for the remainder of the weekend in Phoenix, Arizona.

Brad Keselowski was 2nd quickest in the opening round of practice at the Phoenix, Arizona race track. He grabbed 5th in qualifying as teammate Ryan Blaney claimed the pole position.

The NASCAR ejection penalty has been used at three of four tracks so far on the 2019 racing season. That is in part due to the reduction in tolerance regarding NASCAR inspection failures.

New for 2019, it only takes two failed inspection for a member of the team’s road crew to be ejected. Last year, it took three failures to bring the same penalty.

Notes

Here are the new penalty formats regarding NASCAR inspection:

1 NASCAR inspection failure: No harm, come back and try again.

2 NASCAR inspection failures: A crew member is ejected from the race track for the duration of the weekend.

3 NASCAR inspection failures: If a team failed three times then they would not be allowed to qualify.

4 NASCAR inspection failures: If a team failed four times then they lose a car chief, miss qualifying and they have to make a pass through on lap 1 of the race.

No team failed 3 times or more during this morning’s inspection session. However, more inspections remain ahead of next Sunday’s race at ISM Raceway.
