Tyler Erb comments on his new dirt late model team; Early success

Tyler Erb has won 3 of 8 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series races so far with Best Performance Motorsports

At the start of 2019, Tyler Erb was signed to drive for Best Performance Motorsports. Together, they will tour with the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. 65 feature events across 37 venues and 22 states.

The team opened with a bang! They picked up three LOLMDS wins in the first 4 events.

When this deal with Best Performance Motorsports was first announced, there was no announcement of what series you were going to run. I was under the impression and I think a lot of people were, that this team was going to dial back and not run a national tour. Was that ever the case or part of the initial discussion?

“No, not at all. We were going to run Lucas. That was the plan from the whole get go,” Tyler Erb explained to RacingNews.co .

“There’s a lot of people over the off-season that announce all these big plans. They announce this, that and don’t make it beyond speedweeks.”

“It’s not a big announcement to say you’re going to do this or do that. You just do it. That wasn’t that important.”

“If somebody asked, I’d tell them, ‘Yeah, we’re running Lucas.’ Other than that, we didn’t need a whole press release or anything.”

“They’re not scaling back by any means. We’re racing just as much as anyone, if not more. We just kinda keep to ourselves and have our own thing. We’re parked out here in the woods by ourselves. I’m not a big publicity guy like that.”

Tyler Erb was parked in the back portion of the East Bay Raceway pit area at the time of this interview. Most of the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series regulars were parked behind turns 1-2 where the crowd could see. They were in the back, winning races and doing their own thing.

“Some weeks, I won’t even say nothing on social media. I just don’t like to say stuff sometimes. I know Eric and Randall are the same way.”

Eric Brock is the co-owner of Best Performance Motorsports. You won’t see Brock and he rarely joins the photo shoot in victory lane after a win. Randall Edwards is the crew chief.

“We have our own deal going. We don’t need the publicity for stuff like that. We’d rather get it by what we do.”

Early success with Best Performance Motorsports

You’re smoking the field right now. So, how much of that is you going off the notebook from Josh Richards on the year prior versus creating your own? How much are you deviating from the notebook that the team already has?

“I mean, we brought our own notebook. Josh and Randall had a lot of stuff they did together. But, everything that’s on this thing right now is what Randall and I worked on.”

“What I thought and what he thought. Then, we put it together. We all have our own kicks and tricks.”

“If everyone could drive the same thing, it would be a lot easier. But, it’s not like that. We made every decision as we worked on this thing.”

“I guess you could say it’s a little bit of both. But, at the end of the day, we decide what we’re going to put on this thing.”

Surprised?

Are you surprised with the success so far? Or is this kind of what you expected?

“I expect to run good. But, winning — You can have the best car here and run 2nd, 3rd, 4th sometimes. You just never know.”

To the point of this interview, Tyler Erb had won every Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series heat race he was in.

“To be as consistent as we’ve been. Stuff like that. Yeah, it’s kind of surprising.”

“After the first night, as good as the car was. We would have to do something ourselves to put ourselves out of the race.”

“Even when we ran 4th that night. I don’t think we were good enough to win. Earl was really good. It just wasn’t our night. We missed it a little bit.”

“We gotta try stuff. We’re trying to make our car better as we go toward the championship.”

Currently, Tyler Erb sits 40 points back of Jonathan Davenport for the point lead in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series. The tour resumes this weekend at Atomic Speedway (Ohio) and Brownstown Speedway (Indiana).
