Last week, we saw a wide range of games at the end of the pit lane. The end results was no driver turning a lap in qualifying. We don’t expect that to happen this week on the short track.
However, this could be the last edition of this qualifying format. NASCAR is likely to make change before next week’s race weekend.

Martinsville Qualifying
Round 1 – Report
Duration: 10 minutes (Top 24 advance)
Many cars head out on the track. They are making one very slow lap only to return to the pit lane. They’re just getting some heat in the fluids and the brakes.
Corey LaJoie and Cody Ware will not participate in this session. Each of those drivers suffered crash in practice.
4 minutes remain in round one, 17 cars have turned a lap.
Ricky Stenhouse Jr’s run has been disallowed! He was caught speeding after his run. New since last week, pit road speed is enforced for qualifying.
Stenhouse Jr will miss the cut by one position!
“I didn;t really realise it was a rule that you had to be at speed coming in,” Ricky Stenhouse Jr says after his run.
Denny Hamlin wins round one of knockout qualifying at Martinsville Speedway!

Round 2 – Report
Duration: 10 minutes (Top 12 advance)
Denny Hamlin jumps right back to the top of the board in round two.
4 minutes remain, Ryan Preece sits 12th on the board. This is only his 2nd career start in the series. 3 minutes remaining, he’s bumped by Keselowski.
Ryan Blaney is sideways off the corner.
Kyle Busch drove to the win in the truck series race less than an hour ago. He’s just been bumped by Chris Buescher. Joe Gibbs Racing will need to make an emergency second run to advance.
Busch will not advance. Denny Hamlin sweeps qualifying so far as he’s quickest in round two!

The green is out early in round three. Daniel Suarez has been caught speeding while leaving the pit lane. He’ll return to the pit lane to start his run over.
2 minutes remain, Almirola sits at the top of the board as 7 cars have turned a lap. Hamlin is 6th quickest on his first lap.
40 seconds remain, Joey Logano jumps to the top of the board. That was 4+ laps into his round three run. He got faster and faster each lap.
Joey Logano will start from the pole position in the STP 500 at Martinsville Speedway!
