NASCAR crew member ejected at Texas Motor Speedway

Narrow tolerances regarding NASCAR inspection have resulted in the ejection of the Joe Gibbs Racing crew member

Erik Jones failed pre-qualifying inspection two times on Friday at Texas Motor Speedway. Per the new rules, a crew member is ejected on a second failed attempt.

Each NASCAR team travels with a 12 person road crew. It’s up to NASCAR on which of those members they elect to eject from the facility. Previously, we’ve seen car chiefs as well as engineers.

In this case, car chief Jason Overstreet has been ejected. The #20 car chief will remain outside of the pit area for the remainder of the race weekend.

Additionally, Erik Jones has lost 15 minutes of practice time. The first practice session was focused on qualifying trim. The second practice on Saturday morning was a rain out.

Teams now have just one practice session remaining to dial in their cars for the race on Sunday. Erik Jones will spend 15 minutes of that session in the penalty box.

Erik Jones has won three NASCAR Xfinity Series races at the speedway. In addition, he’s also won a NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series event.

Erik Jones advanced into the final round of Texas qualifying. He’ll start the race from the 11th position.

Inspection Failures: Rule book

Inspection infractions have been amplified for 2019. The new violations and penalties are as follows:

1 NASCAR inspection failure: No harm, come back and try again.

2 NASCAR inspection failures: A crew member is ejected from the race track for the duration of the weekend.

3 NASCAR inspection failures: If a team failed three times then they would not be allowed to qualify.

4 NASCAR inspection failures: If a team failed four times then they lose a car chief, miss qualifying and they have to make a pass through on lap 1 of the race.

No team failed 3 times or more during this morning’s inspection session. However, more inspections remain ahead of Sunday’s race at Texas Motor Speedway.
