Two-time Indy 500 winner arrested

Al Unser Jr is a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner. He won the event in 1992 and again in 1994.

This week, the NTT Indycar Series has returned to Indianapolis, Indiana. The 103rd running of the Indy 500 is set for Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Unser was arrested by the Avon Police Department on early Monday morning. According to the police report he was charged with operating while intoxicated.

The former Indy 500 champion driver was booked near 3:30am on Monday.

Unser has been arrested for drunk driving on at least two previous occasions. The first was in Navada back in 2007, more than a decade since his most recent run with the law. Another drunk driving incident took place in New Mexico back in 2011.

The former racing driver is a two-time CART champion. He claimed those titles in 1990 and 1994. His last Indycar Series start came in 2007 via the Indy 500, he finished 26th.

Unser was booked in the Hendricks County Jail and has since been released.
