Race Report

Green, Pagenaud gets the jump on the inside line. He’s clear before the flag stand.

Lap 6, Herta has come to a stop on the apron with mechanical issues. The caution is out.

Green, Pagenaud leads Carpenter into turn one. Power moves to the outside in turn one and sweeps around Carpenter to take 2nd.

Lap 30, Pagenaud leads the field by 1 second. Pit stops will begin shortly.

Lap 32

Lap 32, Pagenaud heads to the pit lane first. He’s been leading since the green but complaining of understeer.

James Davison is spun backwards on the pit land after contact with Casroneves. Davison jumped on the brakes as he approached his stall and was tagged in the rear. Castroneves has been handed a drive through penalty.

Lap 43, Pagenaud has cycled back to the lead. He leads Power by 1.5 seconds.

Lap 65, Pagenaud returns to the pit lane to begin the second green flag pit cycle. Lap 68, Ed Carpenter pits from the lead.

A crew member is down on the pit lane. It’s a member of the Jordan King crew. The medical staff is attending to him on the pavement of the pit lane. They carry him off the pit lane on a stretcher and the rest of the crew returns to the car to complete the pit stop. He was clipped as the cat entered the stall.

Lap 72, Pagenaud cycles back to the lead. Lap 74, the caution is out as a car spins and is parked after contact with the wall.

Will Power has been sent to the tail ahead of the green. He ran over an air hose on his pit stop.

Green, Pagenaud leads into turn one. Carpenter restarted behind two lap cars. He aggressively passed them on the inside and follows the leader into turn one.

Lap 100

Indy 500 Scoring at Lap 100: 1. Pagenaud; 2. Carpenter; 3. Newgarden; 4. Rossi; 5. Bourdais; 6. Daly; 7. Pigot; 8. Ericsson; 9. Rahal; 10. Ferrucci;

Lap 101, Pagenaud pits from the lead. Lap 102, Ed Carpenter heads to the pit lane.

It’s now lap 112, Rossi had a run on Pagensud down the front stretch. He looks go the outside but can’t make it work.

Lap 113, the pit cycle is complete. Pagenaud returns to the lead as Rossi runs 2nd. Rossi’s tires are a few laps newer but Pagenaud has the advantage of clean air.

Lap 125, Rossi us back on the bumper of the race leader.

Lap 130, Pagenaud pits from the lead. He’s been the first car to put all day. The team is concerned about fuel mileage as his Chevrolet isn’t getting the fuel millage of the Honda’s.

Lap 138, Rossi heads to the pit lane. Trouble! The crew is struggling to get fuel in the car. Rossi pounds on the steering wheel. It’s a lengthy stop and the caution waves as Ericsson  spins coming to the pit lane. The fuel is in but that was a 30 stop.

Officials are cleaning out lane two ahead of the restart. Pagenaud is drafting the pace car to save fuel, inches behind.

Green, Pagenaud leads into turn one. They run three wide for 2nd. Carpenter holds 2nd for now. Three wide again down the back. Newgarden climbs to 2nd.

Lap 151

Lap 151, Newgarden has a run on Pagenaud down the back stretch. He looks to the inside and takes the lead! That’s the first pass for the race lead all day outside of pit cycles.

Lap 162, Pagenaud is back on the bumper of the race leader. He has no urge to pass as he’s drafting his teammate to save fuel. Ed Carpenter is right there with them in 3rd.

Lap 168, Pagenaud had a run on Newgarden down the back. He looks to the inside into turn three. Pagenaud hits the pit lane off turn four.

Lap 169, Newgarden heads to the pit lane.

Lap 177, Rossi has a run on Pagenaud. He looks to the inside. This is the race for 3rd now but will soon be a race for the lead.

Lap 178

Lap 178, big crash. Rahal is run to the infield grass by Bourdais. Several cars pound the outside wall behind them. The red flag is out.

Following a near 20 minute red flag for cleanup we’re set to go back racing. It’s going to be a 13 lap shootout to the finish in the 2019 Indy 500! Rossi will lead Pagenaud to the restart.

“A bunch of angry cars behind me. Little do they know, I’m angrier,” Rossi radio.

Green flag, Pagenaud has a run on Rossi down the front stretch! Pagenaud looks to the outside into turn one, he’s clear! Pagenaud leads off turn one.

12 to go, Rossi has a run on Pagenaud as they head into turn one. He looks to the outside and retakes the race lead!.

11 to go, Pagenaud has a run into turn one and he looks to the outside once again. Pagenaud sweeps back to the race lead!

10 to go

10 to go, Sato moves to 3rd and he’s right there with the leaders!

8 to go, Pagenaud blocks the inside lane and runs against the inside pit wall. Rossi has a look on the outside into turn one but he lifts and Pagenaud holds the lead.

5 to go, Rossi is making chassis adjustments on the fly. He remains on the bumper of the race leader.

3 to go, Rossi has a run. He looks to the outside, he’s clear. Rossi leads off turn one.

2 to go, Pagenaud has a look on the outside into turn one, he lifts. He has a run off turn two. Pagenaud looks to the outside into turn three, he’s clear!

Final lap, Ross is on his bumper off turn two. They snake down the back. Rossi looks on the outside into turn three but he lifts.

Simon Pagenaud wins the the 2019 Indy 500!
