Clash at The Mag: Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series drug test issued today

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series drivers will take part in a random drug test today at Magnolia Motor Speedway

The Clash at The Mag is a Drug Free Sport event

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series has announced a random drug test screening. The announcement was given in Thursday’s drivers at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, Mississippi.

39 drivers are in the pit area in Columbus. They’re participating in a three day show, The Clash at The Mag.

All drivers took a random draw shortly after the drivers’ meeting announcement at 7:00pm on Thursday. 10 of those drivers (25% of the field) who are selected at random via draw will be required to participate in Friday’s drug test.

Those 10 drivers will be required to return to the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series trailer at exactly 4:15pm on Friday. Failure to complete the random drug test at said time will default to a positive test result per the rulebook.

Test completion

If a test is positive, we likely won’t hear about any test results before the end of the race weekend or even next week.

It takes about one to two weeks for a test to be done to completion. In the event of a positive test, the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series works with the drivers directly to make sure all of the prescription notes are presented to the series for cancellation from the test results.

In the event of a doctors prescription, that obviously wouldn’t enforce a penalty due to a positive test result. That’s assuming the test was positive due to the prescription listed. If a driver tests positive for a specific substance and lacks a prescription for that substance, that would likely bring a suspension to said driver.

The Clash at The Mag is a three day dirt late model show. The event is hosted in Columbus, Mississippi. The first two days of the show feature $5,000 main event payouts.

Night two resumes tonight. The first two nights will set the starting lineups for the final day of the show. The event at Magnolia Motor Speedway will conclude on Saturday with a $15,000 to win payout.

Dirt Racing Drug Testing:
Recent History

This is not the first drug test handed out in dirt late model competition. Every few months, typically at larger events, series officials will issue a random test.

This is the third test of the 2019 racing season.

Other recent tests that I’m aware of date back to September 2018 at Brownstown Speedway. That test was held the weekend of the Jackson 100. All drivers passed the screening.

In July 2018, they hosted the same test at Tri-City Speedway on July 13. All drivers passed that previous random drug screening at Tri-City.

Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series rulebook

The following note is from the LOLMDS rulebook on their drug testing enforcement as well as the penalties that have the potential to be attached to a positive test.

“No driver or crew member may be under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any other controlled substances while competing. The Series reserves the right to require drug testing in order to assist its enforcement of the Series’ no alcohol and no drug policy.”

“Decisions on drug testing and disciplinary action (which may include, but is not limited to immediate ejection from a track, a fine of $500.00, a 90-day suspension, and/or a denial of further entry to Lucas Oil I-10 Race Promotions, Inc. sanctioned events) is at the sole discretion of the Series.”

Correction: This story has been updated to note this as the third test of the 2019 racing season.
