A new rules package is in play for this trip to the Poconos. A taller 8″ spoiler, standard radiator pan, larger front splitter and aero ducts have increased downforce and drag. Additionally, the tapered spacer is installed on the engine to reduce the power to about 550 from the previous 850.

Report

Duration: 50 minutes

Teams are working on the balance to hold it flat out in turn two. That’s unheard of for Pocono Raceway.

Kyle Busch has been very vocal against the new rules package. You wouldn’t be able to tell so far in practice as he tops the times sheet at the halfway point.

Halfway in Practice 1 at Pocono: 1. Kyle Busch (52.880); 2. Brad Keselowski (53.037); 3. Chase Elliott (53.043); 4. Erik Jones (53.078); 5. Ryan Blaney (53.115); 6. Martin Truex Jr; 7. Kevin Harvick; 8. Jimmie Johnson; 9. Joey Logano; 10. Clint Bowyer;

How does that relate to the old rules package? On June 3rd, 2018 Kyle Busch was fastest in practice one with a time of 50.865. So far, they’re about 2 seconds slower per lap over last year’s event.

Teams are really focused on the front splitter of the race cars. The nose needs to be sealed to the race track but you don’t want it dragging the race surface. Springs are all over the Adam Petty Garage area.

William Byron was struggling early in practice. Ahead of the final run, Chad Knaus held a meeting in the garage and the team threw a new setup at it. In his final row, Byron jumped from the bottom half of the times sheet all the way into the top 10.

Daniel Suarez wins the opening round of NASCAR practice at Pocono Raceway!
