Sterling Marlin set for return following third brain surgery

Marlin has a new car for short track racing at Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville; He tried to debut it over the weekend, it didn’t work out

Sterling Marlin has been in a battle with Parkinson’s Disease in recent years. However, multiple brain surgeries haven’t kept him out of the race car or victory lane.

Three months ago, Marlin had his most recent brain operation. Marlin had Deep Brain Stimulation surgery on April 11th.

“I am committed to my health journey and working hard on my recovery process,” Marlin said after the April surgery.

“I am feeling better and getting stronger every day. As I have said, this is not an overnight process. I know many of you were wondering why I was not at the track the past few weeks, especially for Kyle Ivey’s win for Sterling Marlin Racing. I wanted to let everyone know I am feeling better and am continuing to recover,” Marlin concluded on June 1.

The return

He has not circled the track since the most recent surgery. However, that was set to change over the weekend.

Marlin had plans to unload at Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville. The team brought a brand new race car and were set for battle on the half-mile short track.

Unload, he did. But, mechanical clutch issues caused him to miss practice. Marlin didn’t want to turn his first laps since the surgery and with the new car, in an actual race session.

Due to missing practice, Marlin loaded up. He now has plans to return to the same track, at a later date. He didn’t specify when his next race will be. However, the next late model event at Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville is set for August 10.

“With us having mechanical problems all week. Clutch issue today so no practice. And a new car. Didn’t want the actual race to be my first time on track in this car. Soon,” Marlin stated via twitter after putting the new car back in the box.

Marlin is only two wins away from setting the all-time win record at the track that’s more than a century old.

Marlin spent 33 years in the premier division of stock car auto racing. He has 748 NASCAR Cup Series starts and collected 10 wins. He ran his last race in 2009 with career earnings totaling $43,574,157.
