Drivers will be WFO around Michigan International Speedway. A new rules package featuring more downforce and less horsepower has left the throttle pedal stuck to the floor around the large NASCAR oval.

PJ1 track bite has been installed on the track surface this weekend. In this case, it’s been applied to lane three, right against the wall.

We’ve seen a wide range of this being used at various race tracks. However, this will become the first track owned by International Speedway Corporation to use the compound.

Michigan Practice
Report

Duration: 50 minutes

Erik Jones is the first car on the track. Brad Keselowski is the second car on track. Both of these drivers call MIS their home race track.

This is the only practice session ahead of qualifying later this afternoon. We’re seeing a lot of single car runs for 1-2 laps.

Clint Bowyer is dragging the trackbar mount on his run. In every corner, the sparks fly rapid out from under the rear bumper. He shuts it down after one lap.

Halfway in MIS practice: 1. Brad Keselowski (38.090); 2. Daniel Hemric (38.150); 3. Joey Logano (38.192); 4. Ryan Blaney (38.194); 5. Kevin Harvick (38.217); 6. Jimmie Johnson (38.232); 7. Austin Dillon (38.272); 8. Paul Menard (38.372); 9. Denny Hamlin (38.401); 10. Clint Bowyer (38.407);

Brad Keselowski sits at the top of the board so far. Michael McDowell has turned the most laps of all drivers with just four totaled.

Daniel Hemric nearly lost a race car. The trackbar mount was dragging heavy on the right rear. As he went into the corner, the backend stepped out. Hemric was able to correct it and pulled it right back to the pit lane.

15 minutes remain, Clint Bowyer is done in this practice round. He’s serving a 15 minute practice penalty from last week.

1 minute remains in the session, Austin Dillon jumps to the top of the board!

Austin Dillon wins the opening round of practice at Michigan.
