They’ll be grouped up in this round of practice. The rules package has brought a reduction in horsepower and an increase in downforce. That means the cars are slower along with more on throttle time.

Michigan Final Practice
Report

Duration: 50 Minutes

They’re in packs early. The new rules package has bunched up the field. Drivers are working to get their cars handling in traffic.

The drivers were wide open in the first practice as well as in qualifying. But, not all are wide open in a pack. Clint Bowyer is being forced to lift as he travels a group of 3 cars.

Halfway in Michigan final practice: 1. Erik Jones (37.926); 2. Alex Bowman (38.143); 3. Kevin Harvick (38.168); 4. Austin Dillon (38.199); 5. Daniel Suarez (38.218); 6. Clint Bowyer (38.218); 7. Ryan Blaney (38.225); 8. Jimmie Johnson (38.249); 9. Kyle Larson (38.261); 10. Martin Truex Jr (38.263);

Brad Keselowski leads a pack of cars. They run nose to tail.

16 minutes to go, Daniel Suarez has a flat left rear. The back end steps out as he slides up the banking. He lightly tags the wall with the right rear but he keeps it from over correcting and into the wall.

The red flag is out. Daniel Suarez is coasting on the apron. With the flat tire, he’s rolling slowly back to the garage to avoid the tire from tearing up the car.

2 minutes remain, another large group has formed on the track. There’s not a whole lot of side by side action but they’ve lined up nose to tail.

Kyle Busch is exploring with the PJ1. Busch works to the right rear of Joey Logano. The trackbite helped make that pass. This is the first time we’ve seen the traction compound installed at Michigan. That move right there could be a sign for what we’ll see on Sunday.

Erik Jones wins this NASCAR Cup Series practice session at Michigan International Speedway!
